Give the buyer a chance to make good.... it may have been an honest mistake (although I doubt it). If they don't make good, contact the Postal service and the FBI and they will nail somebody's behind to the barn door.

Mail fraud for sure, and counterfeiting (maybe).

I seriously doubt the USPS and FBI will do a heckuva lot over a $50 ripoff. If the buyer won't make good, about the best you can do is post all his info here as a warning to other folks who might fall for the scam. And that's NOT counterfeit money -- it's plainly labelled as fake. Consider it a $50 lesson.

hi , guys , I pm' ed the buyer , waiting for a reply ,
I have a FBi buddie on another forum,
will pick his brain , how long do you think
would be fair to wait fro a response to post
a warning to the forum , if needed ?
many thanks, happy

If you don't reply in a week or so I would post all of his info here on this form. The thing is I have not seen a fifty in years, he had this bill laying around and did not know it was fake I think not.

I get $50's all the time. The bank girls always get a kick out of me when I hold both 50's and 100's up to check them while I am at their teller window. Guess they are not bright enough to know that once you walk out the door with them, they are yours----good or bad. Personally I would rather take care of it then and there, instead of when I try to use it for my next purchase.

I am going to lay odds in your favor that just about any Ruger Forum member will make good on this. If he has not taken care of you after a week, I would definitely not hesitate to share all his info right here in BIG BOLD PRINT.

I personally look forward to Happy's daily posts and I am quick on the trigger when I see one I need. Wherever/however you continue to bring us the great leather, please know that I really appreciate it. :)

Does it matter if it says: "this note not legal?" Is it the same size as a real $50 dollar bill? It's the same coloring and layout as legal tender.

But! If the member here has been around any amount of time, I'm sure they will pay you in real greenbacks. The few items I've sold, I have shipped before getting the check in the mail, I haven't worried about if they would pay or not. (And everyone has paid.)

My 2C
It would be pretty hard not to notice that was a fake, with that big writing. However, I am always inclined to give the other guy a chance to make good, and believe there is always an outside possibility that if this is a member in good standing with a post count of at least a couple hundred, it could be he was oblivious to the writing on the bill. However if this is a new member with very low post count I believe you got had. You didn't notice it right away either---
Just recently I had a response to a post on an item that elicited a response to buy that was a scammer.

Seems kind of obvious to me one of two things happened... either the buyer some how made a mistake and did not realize the bill was not real or he or she is ripping you off.... if it is the second then we need to know even though obviously they are willing to take the publicity hit... unless they were hoping you would just squirrel that (50) away and not notice it until later and not know where it came from.

side note... interesting bill I actually wonder what it is worth.

WTF sends cash thru the mail?

"I" TF send cash. Often. And I often receive cash thru the mail. For a relatively small purchase, it's worth the chance as long as it keeps me from going to town and standing in a post office line.

Not to mention the fact that if/when someone happens to steal a check from the mail, now they have all your info including your checking account number. If they are not a hard core ID thief, they can still easily "wash" a check and change the amount to an amount they really want instead of 20 or 30 bucks. Think I will continue to just send cash for small purchases.

I may have for the last time. I sent $318 (I just happened to have the exact amount when I was getting the letter ready) the post office said it made it to the spot (which I didn't now was a UPS mail box store) but never got to the guy I was sending it to. I won't do that no more. I've done it more than a few times in the past but... It's not worth it.

Following to hear the update. I get paid in cash frequently and am always leery about getting fake bills. Good reminder to pay close attention.

I finally it hard to believe that he was trying to rip you off. Not saying that I would never miss a "fake" like that if I was in a hurry, in a dark cave, etc. But if someone was trying to do a rip off, wouldn't he send a more realistic fake.

Hope you get it resolved Happy.

Makes me wonder what my AC/DC bucks with Angus Young on it would buy me! :P
