heading back to xp/dial up world

Are you moving to 1990 or what?

Hey, don't knock it.. I still use XP, and it works.. Sure it's old by software standards.. But it serves me well..

XP is not being supported anymore. That means no updated security patches. One of the reasons there were such large problems recently was institutions running outdated operating systems. I know everyone has some gripe about Microsoft. Me too. I have been pretty happy with Windows 10 however. Why are you going back to XP and dial up?

So what if its not supported with security patches. Run other programs to combat things like that.
Besides it seems the more MS patches things the more they have to patch it.

I had the same attitude until I got the ransom note and everything was encrypted.
I was warned---(family that works in the computer security trade), but just kept ignoring the advice. I was lucky---I only lost 13 months of stuff. Most of it was not a big deal, except the pictures. Every now and then I remember a picture that I lost and kick myself one more time for not listening. Not only did I upgrade (NO WAY was I paying anyone ransom), but I also do a nightly backup on an external hard-drive.

That's the secret right there.. Backup everything.. It can happen on any operating system. Not just XP.. I've never had that issue. Never once. But then again, I watch what I do as well..

Hi,

And it's been the secret since about Day One. I remember my sister trying to beat into both her husband's and my heads to "Back it up! Back it up! Back it up!" umpteen years ago when I was just a newbie trying to figure out DOS. When Win 3.1 came out, and was supposed to cure all that ails mankind, make your teeth whiter, your performance better, double the size of your bank account and deliver on whatever other tired old promises Redmond keeps giving us (does Microsoft ever sound a bit like that politician who's gonna fix education?) I had lots of problems and one day the whole thing came to a screeching halt. All I could hear in the back of my head was my sister's voice: "I hope you had it backed up!"

I did, and still do to this day, regardless of how "secure" Bill's playmates tell me their latest travesty is (yeah, I hate Win10, too--I've hit Ctrl-Alt-Del more since the first of February this year than I did from Win95/98 thru XP to Vista and 7/8/8.1 all put together!)... Thanks, Sis!
