My friend related this story to me this morning as we were having coffee:
He met his wife while he was stationed at Keesler AFB near Mobile, Alabama. He had met her through a mutual friend on sort of a blind date. He appeared to like her and dated her several times. Her father did not want her dating servicemen. But it appeared they were more than casual friends.
So, the girl's father decided to conduct a background check of his own. He drove from Mobile to Tupelo, Mississippi to ask around. He stopped at the local drug store and asked the lady working there if she knew Charles D---. and, if so, could she tell him anything about him. She could, and did. Gave Charles a clean bill of health.
So, the girl's father returned to Mobile and gave his consent to their continued romance. Some time after that, they were married, and recently celebrated, I believe, sixty years of marriage.
Oh, and the lady at the drug store? She happened to be Charles' mother.
