Hawkeye

I sent a post on this but it seems to have disappeared. Did Hawkeyes come from the factory tapped for a scope. How much is one worth in excellent condition but no box. I have one from my father's collection, but I am not currently entertaining offers.

yes, they were drilled and tapped (two holes) out on the barrel, just in front of the receiver (frame)............ boxed, mint guns , low numbers obviouly are premiums and well in to the $2000 range,seen some go higher, and I've bought them lower......condition is paramont,boxed with the shipper ,we saw one sell for well over $3000.............I think the Blue book is pretty on , of course gotta "add' value for the box...........there are fewer and fewer "original" mint specimans anymore, with so many having been altered, rechambered, etc.

There have been a couple Hawkeyes on GB over the past couple months that were in the 2400-2700 dollar range that haven't sold... Not bad guns but they have a limited market. Condition is the key to value with these old pieces!

Wouldn't surprise me at all when the Maxis get to be 50+ years old Jack... although I doubt many of us here will be around to see it!

I'm looking for a Hawkeye 'beater' for a caliber conversion. There doesn't seem to be any. There's many with extra holes drilled in them for scope mounts but the guns are still nice and still too high priced.

Good luck, Jim. I started this discussion asking about holes drilled for scopes. I wonder if those are the holes you are talking about. Maybe you've seen some that have more than the factory two.

It might be tough to find one in fair to poor conditon. My thinking is that most of them are higher grade because they were no picnic to shoot.

It seems when folks put scopes on them, they didn't take time to get the mount the guns were drilled for in the barrel or the holes didn't work for their scopes. So I see them often with holes in the top strap.

Actually the Hawkeye is a joy to shoot. The recoil was was nothing with such a long heavy barrel. I shot a friend's in silhouette matches years ago and the gun and ammo functioned flawlessly as well. Ammo was very reasonable at the time too. But I think you're right that they just didn't get used much, kind of a specialty item.

There's so many available new cartridges since it was introduced and many old calibers that it would be fun to re-chamber to from 25-20 to 204 Ruger. Or big bores up to the 500 Wyoming Express depending on the pressure Hawkeyes are safe with.

Personally, my preferences are Hawkeyes in the lower SN range that have MICRO marked rear sights, steel ejector housings and NO Extra non factory D&T holes. See Dougan and Hiddleson texts for full information on Hawkeye variations............. 8)

I'm with Splitz! Non-Factory mods can "make or break" a potential purchase.

I feel very fortunate to have one NICE Hawkeye in my collection. 100% original but no shipping sleeve........

I once owned a hawkeye. I bought a base built for it and never put it on. It may exist in some of my junk. I sold the gun right after, close to 35 years ago. If I run across it I will post it.
