Hawkeye stock replacement

Any suggestions? I purchased a somewhat banged up used rifle. The discrepancies were not disclosed by the buyer. The metal is all good but it came in missing the front stud and the rubber butt pad is torn from it's housing. The stock itself is pretty scratched up on the left side as though it were layed down on that side many times?? Can a skeleton stock be used on the newer version rifles ? Am I best to use an aftermarket such as Hogue or B&C??

Pretty pitiful stock on these guns even if it were new....it spells C H E A P all day long. Disapppointed to say the least.

Stocks are interchangeable between Hawkeyes and MkII's. So yes , a boat paddle will fit as will any other. There are a few different "sizes" besides long or short action.

They are basically...

Standard Short action. 223 243 7mm-08 308 etc
Short mag. Wsm and saum calibers including 350 rem mag. Will have a larger magazine well but the barreled action fits into a standard short action stock. All is needed is to widen the mag area in the stock.

Standard long action. 270 30-06 etc. and some mag calibers that came with slimmer barrels.

Medium weight long action. Same but wider barrel channel for medium taper barrels. 25-06 , 7mm , 300 , and 338 mags.

Magnum actions. 375 h&h. Not sure what others qualify.

And im not familiar with where the ruger compact magnums fit in all this either.

It's for a 260 Rem....so my guess: standard short action...

+1. Yes, Hawkeye actions will drop right into a 'boatpaddle' stock. My stainless 'ought 6 Hawkeye is wearing one.

Yes. Anything from that class of short action calibers will do the job.

I have a laminated stainless MkII in 7mm-08 that is a joy to carry. Sure its a few ounces heavier than a synthetic but it points and balances so nice. A hawkeye stock is slimmer than the MkII's were and a factory stock will more than likely be your best bet on a simple swap without getting involved with any inletting issues. P I can't help as far as aftermarket goes. All mine wear factory stocks.

Try Ruger. Their replacement stocks can be both affordable and, with luck, quite attractive. You will have to ship the rifled action to them and they will only reinstal an original model stock.

Many of the mass production after market stocks are overly heavy and clunky in use.

I'd go with a Zytel and custom paint. Well I did, just waiting for it to get back home.

I put a Boyd on my 280 Hawkeye in Nutmeg, turned out sharp. And as mentioned the MKII and Hawkeye stocks are interchangeable.
