Hawkeye Compact Bolt Action

I have just purchased a Hawkeye Compact and it shoots GREAT but the bolt action is terrible. After shooting a round trying to get the bolt to open leaves alot to be desired my wife for whom the gun was purchased can barely open the action.. Does anyone have the answer to make the action smoother?

very strange, something is wrong. I have several Compacts, all work flawlessly.

Is the most drag on the rotation of the bolt, or the rearward pull?

The drag is in the rotation of the bolt.

If its new, you'll need to work the action a few hundred times to slick it up. You can use a little Remington 40X cleaner to speed up the process, it's got diatomaceous earth in it, which is an abrasive. You'll want to clean the bolt well after you use the Rem 40x.

you said you have a NEW gun, did you do a thorough cleaning of the new gun (bolt, chamber, bore)?

They do come a bit rough. Do as mattsbox99 says. Working the bolt a couple hundred times with a bit of bore paste applied in the contact areas will get it nicely broken-in. Make sure you clean the paste thoroughly afterwards. It is pretty abrasive. Give it a good spraying with Rem action cleaner followed by a light coating of oil and you're good to go.

Remove the bolt and useing a nail or punch, through the hole in the cocking piece indicator, pull back slightly and unsrew it from the bolt. clean the coarse thread and lightly grease it. Also a light greasing of the ramp on the bolt that it rides up on. Re-assemble and lightly grease the backside of the locking lugs on the front of the bolt.

I had a Ruger International that had a similar problem. Per the advice on this board, I disassembled the bolt completely and found a metallic shaving in the action. I removed it, cleaned and oiled the action and then it worked like butter.

By the way, I used the video instructions on the Ruger website to learn how to disassemble and reassemble the bolt.
