As to the Marines, my late brother-in-law told this story:

"Men told me, 'Johnny, if you wait to be drafted, you'll end up in the Infantry, where you'll never know where your next meal is coming from, and sleeping in the mud. But if you join the Navy, you'll always have a hot meal and a warm, dry bed to sleep in.' So I joined the Navy, they put me in the Marines and I ended up not knowing where my next meal is coming from, and sleeping in the mud at night."

Johnny fought with the 3rd Marine Division on Bouganville, Guam, and Iwo Jima. He was ready to board a troop ship for the invasion of the Japanese homeland when the atomic bomb ended things.

30+ years in the Army. I spent a career harassing other services. The Marines were a juicy target. That said, I save great respect for my USMC brothers. Frankly, I never met a bad one.

Was Johnny a corpsman, Bob?

In San Diego during the Viet Nam years, it was popular to run down to the Navy recruiter when a draft notice came, in hopes of getting a "good" job. Some of the guys I knew did get them. But a couple ended up in the jungle in Viet Nam, patching up wounded Marines! A different kind of "good" went into their jobs.
