Handled a Ruger Scout today....

I was at Kittery Trading Post in Maine today and I had the chance to handle a Ruger Scout rifle in .308 win today. It was a left handed model but it was still a nice. I liked the handiness of the gun, but I kinda wish Ruger would offer the "export" version in the US. I've seen pictures of hte "export" version of the Scout - it has an 18" barrel, no flash suppressor, and it has a stainless barrel.

Still, it was a neat rifle. Anyone here have a Ruger Scout? If so, how do you like it?

Gave my son-in-law my bolt action model 77 Ruger in 308, and I have been wanting another ever since. A stainless scout with iron sights would get my attention in a hurry. It would be nice to have the threads on the barrel, so a flash hider could be easily added. However, I would be happy either way.

I like the Scout rifles too, but it seems supply has dried up. Hopefully, with the new year, Ruger will get back to cranking them out. On the other hand, Ruger is sure putting out a bunch of new stuff! Pretty exciting.

Some of it. I am not sure we needed another 1911 or AR though. Not at the expense of keeping up with their bread and butter guns. I got to handle one of the Scout rifles, and I like it. Makes me wish I hadn't overspent during the holidays! Thankfully, my M77 flat bolt 308 will do about everything the Scout rifle will do except hold 10 rounds and look tacti-cool.

I'm holding out for an 18" scout like rifle (but no flash hider). I'm hoping Ruger will introduce the stainless export version. If not, I might get a Ruger Compact Magnum in .308 (20" barrel, but with iron sights) or try and find a Lipsey's RSI in 308 (apparently they are all sold out already).

Not to be argue, but I just don't get this rifle. It one of the most awkward looking guns I've ever seen. What is the purpose? What does it do that a more traditional bolt won't do?

They look better to me. Just as accurate. Holds more rounds if ya need it. Have more optics mounting options. Has iron sights optional and has a threaded barrel if you have a 30 cal suppressor.

You have to have an idea of what Jeff Cooper was trying to do with the scout concept to understand it. If you could only have 1 rifle type of thing.....Light weight, hard hitting caliber, medium to large magazine capacity, accurate at rifle distances. I'm not sure if optics were essenial in his model, but I know he was a big fan of the long eye relief scope. I liked it from the day I saw it, so I got one. haven't had a chance to give it a workout yet, but I will soon.

Here is a link to a forum dedicated to the Scout Rifle. Here you will find a great deal of information about the Scout Rifle concept and its history. I enjoy mine a great deal and it is hard to leave it at home when heading to the range.
