Handheld GPS advice ?

I want to purchase a handheld GPS for hunting here in Colorado. Interested in one that has Topo maps and good battery life.
I also saw that Garmin and Magellan both have factory refurb's on discounted price

I know nothing about them.
I was told not to waste my money on a GPS Ap for my phone because out here, you cant rely on cell signals
