Singapore's government said Friday that scammers will face mandatory caning of up to 24 strokes from Dec. 30, under changes to criminal law to deter surging fraud cases. The changes, passed by Parliament last month, strengthen penalties that already include imprisonment and fines. The Home Affairs Ministry said the enhanced punishment will "ensure that our criminal laws remain effective, fair, and responsive to emerging challenges," per the AP.

I remember when the ship I was on was heading to Singapore mid 80's there was an young American man who was to be caned for spitting tobacco on the street. Can't remember if he ever was or American gov't stepped in

Dang wonder if we can get their prosecutors sent to Minnesota. We have lots of Somolian fraud here. Our Governor Walz should be the first one to be caned. Publicly of course!

I've been to Singapore many times, and I love it there. It's very clean and everyone is honest and well behaved. The government makes sure it stays that way.

Possession of illicit drugs is an automatic death sentence.

Spitting gum on the ground or littering will get you some prison time.

Caning is the usual penalty for things that the US would call misdemeanors.

There's no place on the planet that I feel any safer. The main downsides are you can't own guns, and it's cost prohibitive to permit a car. Most people use bikes, scooters, or taxis to get around.

My Frigate stopped in Singapore before heading home from the I.O. Great port of call. The ship handed us out the usual pamphlets warning of the severity of the land regarding litter, vandalism, off limit zones( which is where we always went of course ) and especially drugs. The death penalty apparently was used often there for drug dealers and users also I think. There were many instances of dealers offering their junk on the streets. Of course we didn’t give them a second.

In 1985 I worked/lived in Singapore for 6 months. At that time if caught throwing as much as a gun wrapper down or spitting you spent a week sweeping the street. The Chinese have a bad habit of hacking and spiting. A good way to break bad habits.
If you were caught with drugs that weighed as much as a dime you were considered a dealer and put to death. I think the laws were due to the fact that the OLD Singapore had many Opium Dens that were popular with the Chinese. A very good way to clean things up. Singapore is probably the safest country around and women love to be able to walk the streets at any time.
When I was there most of the old Singapore had been torn down.
It was a great spending a lot of time at the Long Bar and The Tiger Den at the Raffles Hotel throwing darts and drinking Tiger Beer.
As a side note quite a few of the bars had signs that stated, "No New Zealand Military Allowed". They do get a little crazy at times :) :) :)

We should cane them and let em go, enough caning and they'd think twice about crime.

I also went there in 84 if I recall the year correctly on my frigate and command drilled it in our heads you dont want to fool around with the country’s strict laws, they don’t play there, in certain ways anything goes but not in others.
