I have been told that this is now the same powder. When IMR purchased Hodgdon H4227 was discontinued and 4227 became the same. Is this true and it can be used in place of H4227 on all that calls for this powder?
I've heard (and read) they are the same too. I've never loaded any H4227 (it was gone before I ever got to try it), but a lot of IMR 4227. I have used some H4227 data to load cartridges with IMR 4227. I don't load 'really' hot so wasn't a concern. For example, I really like Taffin's load of 20g of 4227 under 250-255g bullet in .45 Colt. He states H-4227. I used IMR-4227. YMMV. Safe in my guns.
Over on the Single-Actions site John Taffin states (Nov 2, 2011)
"THERE IS LESS DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO THAN INDIVIDUVAL LOTS OF EITHER. THE CURRENT #4227 IS EITHER H IN AN IMR CAN OR VICE VERSA; CAN'T REMEMBER WHICH. IT IS THE SAME STUFF."
And ...
"Same stuff... Give Hodgdon's a call, .... I spoke with a ballistican & he was very polite & answered my questions verifying the article in Handloader."
Get ready to be confused. Old IMR 4227 was made in Canada. H4227 was made in Australia. H4227 is no more as a name. Current IMR4227 is made in Australia and is what used to be sold as H4227.
My understanding is they are essentially interchangeable with the start with minimum loads and work up caveat.

Call me skeptical about some of what's gone on at Hodgdon's since they became the mega-distributor for IMR and Winchester in addition to their own brand. I REALLY don't agree w/ the idea of putting ANOTHER powder up using the name of one which WAS different when both were available on the market at the same time... this thread illustrates exactly why.
Agree w/ the advice to get on the phone or drop 'em an e-mail before making ANY assumptions.
