Gun cabinet?

Think this would make a nice gun cabinet with a little modification? :D

Made in 1860's. Walnut. 8 ft. 9 in. T, 10 ft. 2 in. W, 26 in. D.

I sure wish I still lived were I felt secure in keeping my guns in a cabinet like I did in the past. That one looks great! Maybe if it had 1/4" steel behind the wood and 1" thick lexan replacing the glass...

In fact that might be a good business, making gun safes that look like cabinets.
 
any ideal what the original use was. I don't see shelves as if were curio or dish display.
If it was within 15 minutes of me, I would be running it up on your bidding!

I know I ain't getting it, but are the side wings deep enough for standing rifles?
 
That would make a gorgeous gun cabinet! I wont be bidding but would be curious what it ends up going for. Keep us posted. And post pictures if you make a cabinet out of it!
 
That's a nice one if you can find anyone that still dares to put their guns in one, best thing to do with it now is to put some shelves in it and turn it into a china cabinet or use it for knickknacks.
 
Darn! My ceilings are only 8&1/2 feet high. It won't fit. That is a big cabinet. I may be the only one here that probably would not use that for my guns. I suspect one may lower its value by making modifications.
Maybe if I had a Perazzi or a Krieghoff instead of an 870 express, I would think about it.
 
That would be a great display case for use in a SECURED gun room.
A friend who passed away 2 years ago would have appreciated that , and had the space for it.
Beautiful spacious secure room with a "city code approved" six foot by 50" shooting range.
Most of us sure can't put long guns on display in the family room anymore. :(

Won't fit in my house either, and I won't be bidding on it. It does have removable shelving, but not shown in the pic. Removable racks for vertical display of long guns, etc. could be made fairly easily by a good woodworker without affecting the value I think.

You're right that it would be best suited to display of fine firearms and edged weapons and not run of the mill modern weapons. And it certainly is not a safe, so I would expect it to be used in somebodies large secured trophy room, along with the exotic animal mounts.

Now, if I win Powerball this week.............. :wink:

To everyone: This is not in a on-line auction. It's a Victorian Breakfront Cabinet, originally used/designed for formal dinnerware storage, table linens, etc. . I expect it will sell for upwards of $8000.

What a shame, to not be able to show off fine guns because of some stupid rule, or fear of somebody ratting you out :( . I couldn't live like that.

I'm pretty sure most of us on this and other forums would proudly display at least some of their weapons. I do, as do many of the folks around here. One of my late old friends had probably $30,000 worth of fine shotguns on display in a 12 gun cabinet in his living room that he'd been collecting for 50 years or so. Beautiful guns and deserved to be admired.

My small display, which I proudly show off to visitors, even local tradesmen occasionally. I suppose some folks might think that's stupid of me. Oh, well.

Not even any glass. :wink:

I guess I don't understand. I have a 3,600 sq. ft. shop that is full of all types of chemicals and machinery. Why is the lock on the front door not sufficient. Again, I don't understand. Show me where Home Depot or Loews has their fertilizer in a gun safe.. This is just ridiculous. I could break into multiple businesses here and around and build things that would destroy a city block. Who are these idiots writing these laws. Would I get caught, yep. If I were willing to do it what would it matter?

Just such a ridiculous concept. Lock up the guns, of course no one can get to them. I will not live in a state that does that to it's people. Now if you have kids visiting that don't understand then yes, but not under normal circumstances, no. I have firearms laying everywhere in our house and this will never change. JMHO.

You've hi-lighted one of the fundamental differences between "them" and "us". They don't understand how we could possibly not lock up weaponry (or even have any for that matter). I doubt that there will ever be a general reconciliation between the 2 sides. It would be akin to asking sheep to become lions or vice versa.

Many people are very good at enjoying freedom, but few are good at defending it. :)
 
Very nice cabinet would make a kickass gun cabinet in a gun room-vault.

I lock my guns in a safe for no other reason than to keep them.
Took 4 men to get it on the second floor. lol ps

1916 Cogswell & Harrison 1" cal. British Flare pistol. MkIII Queens Mark, . Inherited from my father (blue water Navy from 1937 - 1961), who had occasion to use it a couple times.

Really? Complaining to the choir about the risk of openly displayed guns in this 21st century USA?

The OP photo is one beautiful piece of craftsmanship. Above my pay grade, but nice.

I've posted my display before, but that was kinda beside the point. But thanks for the compliments - I think. :mrgreen: :wink:

I originally just wanted to let y'all know about that giant cabinet going on the auction block if anyone wanted to bid on it. The auctioneer does take phone bids, so if y'all can't make it in person PM me and I'll pass along contact info.

PS: This thread got me thinking about a couple projects for this spring. I'm running out of storage space for ammo, so need to make another ammo box. Think I'll do one in oak this time.

Also need to make a 4 gun rifle rack. Might have to do some rearranging in the den to accommodate that tho. Nothin' but problems around here. :wink:
