I had no idea how to install all the parts in a raw lower unit of one of these. My 'saving grace' was I already had one and could use it to figure most of it out. I had not only ordered the raw lower from Palmetto State Armory but had also bought a month or two back what looked like a kit of parts to go in it. And it was everything, the other really good part was each section of the kit was in different plastic bags... trigger group, mag. release, bolt stop and etc.

I did have to buy the Sig Romeo red dot to go on the upper... that was easier too since I already have two of those on other guns.

Looks good! Mine was test fired yesterday. I need to adjust the buffer/recoil system, as the 9mm is different. It shoots fine,, but the ejection is not quite right.

Contender, what buffer are you using? I had to go up to an 8 ounce buffer to get proper function with full power ammo. Sub-sonic seems to work OK with a 6.5 ounce but the lighter buffer caused unnecessary recoil sensation with full power ammo.
On a 9mm, I absolutely recommend the buffer with the thicker "head" which increases spring pressure a bit and shortens the bolt cycle which eases the strain on the bolt catch if you have the "last round bolt hold open" feature.
For those unfamiliar with the "start up" on an AR: Load ONE round and fire it with the empty mag in place. Do this 3 times. If the bolt locks open each time, you have adequate gas and full bolt travel. Next load ONE round and fire w/o the mag in place and check to see if the safety will engage. Do this 3 times. If the safety engages properly each time, you are certain that the disconnector and sear are working and you haven't assembled a machine gun.
Now, you can load 2-3 rounds and begin sight zero and accuracy testing. I know of a couple guys who beat an AR together, loaded a 30 rounder , and caused a serious issue when the entire mag went downrange(or into the clouds, depending on how well the shooter reacted).

As for 9mm, I guess I got lucky with mine...I use an 8oz "Extended" 9mm buffer and a regular carbine spring and at least the 10 test-rounds I fired worked OK. I've heard a lot of reports of folks building 9mm ARs having buffer/spring combo issues.

Yep, it's an AR-14 says so on the receiver so it is not really and evil black assault rifle.

I would love to have a 9mm but is not on the list right now... with that said a 308 is kind of up there...

As for what I have into it.... the upper was from a full size AR-15 a friend sort of gave me in trade for a pile of AK 47 parts and one rifle many years ago... but I had converted that one to 22lr with a new complete upper with a true 22lr barrel and bolt and so just had the upper laying around. The black lower cost.... $63 and the parts kit cost $120. Then the Sig Romeo sight cost me $140 (I think)... I was going to just put iron sights on it but they didn't have any available in the store. I'm planning to sight it in this afternoon.... I bore sighted it in yesterday... took the upper off put it in a vise...looked through the barrel and adjusted the dot to the same spot.... at 20 ft... I hope that will get me close enough to start adjusting better at 50... then maybe a hundred yards....

When you were casting the aluminum frame how hot did you have to get the aluminum before it would pour in the molds? Also did you use injection molding when you molded the forearm and stock. One other item what grade of steel did you use to form the barrel with and what kind of rifling did you use in the barrel?

Sorry, I guess I simply slapped it together.... I'm sure for folks that do this all the time it is a simple job... for me it was a challenge that I'm proud of.... if for no other reason trying to figure out how the springs in the trigger group go and all those little springs in holes with a pin on the end.

And of course the upper was all ready assembled...

Just got back from my gun range.... The Dern thing works and shoots pretty well for an AR and the trigger is actually not that bad. Got the Sig sight dialed in pretty good... but I was only shooting at 50 yards...

Mobuck,, not to hijack blume's thread,, but my buffer is a 4 oz one. I'm gonna use a reduced power load,, so I need to be able to get proper functioning down. My purpose is PCC category in USPSA.

It's still a "build".

When someone "builds" a house, does that mean that he/she milled all the lumber, drew out all the wire, molded all the PVC/copper pipe, fired the bricks, etc.?

If someone does all that, then he can say he did, but those that accumulated all the materials from other sources do not say "I assembled my house from acquired components"...He still built his house.

Be proud of your accomplishment.

I like it. I built or put together how ever you want to put it a PSA rifle kit about 8 years ago. I did okay on everything but the hammer spring. Somehow I managed to put it in backwards. After light strikes & seeking council here I got it straightened out. I like the "special" markings on your Angry Joe AR-14.
