Grips for "old-style" vs. "new-style" Va

Can anyone tell me if grips from an "old-style" Vaquero are the same or will fit on a "new-style" Vaquero?
I have some great grips on an "old-style" Vaquero and would like to put them on my (currently on order) "new-style" Vaquero. It would be great if they will fit. If not, I will be forced to order some new grips .... what a terrible fate ;- )

If your New Vaquero has the lock,, be sure to get grips with a lock recess on the back.

The good news is there are plenty of choices out there for the NV - from off the shelf to some stellar custom makers, including several who hang out here. For them, the cost can be surprisingly modest, mostly dependent on material. Woods typically are lower cost than more exotics like stag-horn or and certainly the better faux ivories. Real ivories and Sambar stag are very pricey--for any gun.

Your Vaquero has XR3-RED profile grips on it. and the New Vaquero has XR3 profile grips. You can see the difference in the drawings below.

The New Vaquero's "new XR3" grip frame is also .437" in width whereas the Vaquero's XR3-RED grip frame is .500" in width. Since the New Vaquero's grip frame is only .437" in width and the locks are .480" in width and wider than the grip frame this means that any flat backed grips will have to have recesses in the backs to fit over the locks. You can see the recess I put in my grips in the other picture.

When ordering grips you should specify that they are for a "New Vaquero" with the new steel XR3 grip frame. That should be enough to identify the correct grips to any grip maker. Although there is still a lot of confusion even though the steel new XR3 grip frame has been around for around eight years now.

One other simple solution is to just swap the entire grip frame w/grips.

You didn't say what calibers were involved but my New Vaq. in .45 wrapped my knuckle with the shorter (front-to-back per Cary's illustration) grip frame. So I installed an original Vaq. grip frame. You may have some slight fitting to do at the top of the grip frame "ears" around the hammer depending on the vintage of your original Vaq.
