You do know why the roadrunner has that bald spot behind the eye, don't you?
Man was careless and, in a rainstorm, let his fire go out. He was cold and starving. The animals, especially The Trickster (Coyote), took pity on him. So, they all got together and decided to ask the Great Spirit to give Man fire again. Coyote went because he was the most expressive talker. However, because of his history of selfishness and lies, the Great Spirit didn't believe him, so Jackrabbit spoke up. Seeing Jackrabbit and Coyote together convinced the Great Spirit but he warned them that if it was a trick, he would not give Man another chance. So, the Great Sprit gave them a burning stick out of his fire. Jackrabbit took it in his mouth and sprinted away. After a few hundred miles, he was tired and Coyote took over. Coyote ran all the way to the Brazos River, but it was swollen and he couldn't get across.
About this time, Roadrunner came by. He had been by Man's camp and knew the situation. He offered to take the torch. But he had nowhere to put it except behind his ear. He put it there and flew across the river and ran to Man's camp. He delivered fire to man but was horribly burned in the process. As he lay dying from his burns, the Great Spirit wandered by. He told Roadrunner that, in honor of his loyalty and bravery, his descendants would carry that scar as a badge of honor forever.
An old Indian legend=Comanche, I believe.
