I had to put her down yesterday. She was much too young.

I feel your pain. What happened?
She was having sharp back pain for a few days. First vet prescribed pain pills and observation. When pills ran out Friday afternoon she still had pain. We were given an appt. for Sunday (today). Shortly afterwards she went from sharp back pain to dragging back legs to complete paralysis of hind quarters within a few hours. We took her to emergency vet who diagnosed IVDD. Surgery at least $3000 and may or may not work. Also if it happened once, it likely will again. I'm told it's prevalent in dachshunds. The emergency vet was very accomodating in discussing all options including euthanasia as a humane option. We were prepared before hand but it was (is) still difficult.

Sorry for your loss.

There is also a stain of cerebral atoxia in some Spinone that sounds identical.

You do not want to hear this now but take it from a vet of the dog grief wars, getting back in the game is the only sovereign remedy.

Hi...

Just went through this two months ago with our 14-1/2 yr old Black Lab Wesson..we knew it was coming but still hard to deal with.

My wife cried for three days pretty much non-stop.

After five days, I took her to look at a Lab puppy.

Long story short, my son and I went together and bought two Lab pups (litter mates). One yellow, one black...both headstrong and stubborn.

Best thing I could have done...the only time my wife has cried since was when we picked up Wesson's ashes.

Thor and Loki are not a replacement for Wesson (and Smith) his litter mate who died 3 1/2 yrs ago. They are successors.

Go get a new best friend...give a pup a good and secure home. you'll both be better for it.

I understand your pain and grief also. As I write, I have two 12 year old Shelties at my feet. They can no longer jump up on the bed for cuddles and sleep, but still demand to be on the bed. I am a doting dog owner and comply, because I too miss the cuddle time. They are a part of my family. They give unconditional love. We may be made in God's image, but I think dogs were put here to remind us of our relationship to God. Good luck. Bella will be irreplaceable. There are other good dogs out there with which to forge new symbiotic relationships.

Wheelgun, sorry for your loss. Our dog is our family. He's young (4) but he's gone through a lot of discomfort in his short life. It's tough to loose a family member whether 2 legged or 4, under any conditions. RIP Bella.

Been there done that. Yup a puppy will heal the heart. ps

I feel for you, partner. :( It's silly that little animals can take up such a big part of our hearts and leave such big holes when we lose them, but they surely do. I sincerely hope that your time with Bella was good and sweet, and that is how you remember her.

Sorry for your loss. I don't know where I got this:

The Last Battle
If it should be that I grow weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad, I understand;
Don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.

We've had so many happy years -
What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so;
The time has come, so let me go.

Take me where my needs they'll tend
And please stay with me until the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time that you will see
The kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Please do not grieve - it must be you
Who had this painful thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years -
Don't let your heart hold back its tears.

Lost our Lab five years ago and decided not to replace her. Too damn hard to lose them. So we got a little calico cat that was found feral, and we tamed her. Then on a trip last Winter we had to put her down. Aneurism. Wife cried her eyes out.

Wife said enough! Never again.

So two weeks later we got another wild ass cat. Now this one is taking over. Last night she had to be carried from our front room so we could close the door. Made her mad so she bit the wife's toe! Not hard, just a little love nip.

Here we go again!

Be it canine of feline, they make life interesting. :D

One of our vets once told us: "When sad outweighs happy, it's time to say bye bye". We've had to put down more pets than I care to try to count.. Never gets any easier.

We are truly sorry for Bella and you & the family.

Very sorry for your loss.
Although Bella can never be replaced in your heart, there is a homeless dog in a shelter near you that needs a loving home and that would be the best tribute you could make to Bella's memory.

I found my Rosie on the road, where she had been hit by a car 11 years ago. My wife and I had her checked out and we immediatly adopted her. She too has a bad back and we faced $5000 surgery 4 times. Each time she comes back to good health but each time it has taken her longer. I know if her back goes again we will have to say good-bye. I would find the money again but I don't think she could take it. After reading about Bella, Rosie is getting special treatment for the rest of her days. I am so very sorry about Bella. How old was she?

I feel for you and your family. All pet owners go thru the same thing. That does not make your pain hurt any less.

It seems like with every loss I say "never again" but I'm wrong. Everyone of my critters has been a rescue. They just seem to find me. Although the lost hurts, the joy they give makes it bearable.

May Bella rest in peace.

I am so very sorry to hear about your dear Bella. She is so cute in that picture. Been through that awful situation myself a few times and it is never easy. My girl Iris is 13 and I watch her change so gradually....still grateful that she is with me for however long we have

My heart breaks for you and your family. Hugs and prayers sent your way.

100% agreed ! The best tribute to a pet that has passed on is rescuing another needy and loving animal.

Very sorry for your loss. Bella looked like a beautiful little pup.

Dear Wheelgun,

So sorry to hear that. It's a tough call.

We had to make the same choice with our beloved cat, Peaches in 2009. It wrecked us, but we knew it was what needed to be done.

Prayers to you and your family for strength.

Aqualung

Damn; That little dachshund face drove a pain right into my heart; Sorry to hear of your loss;
My Dachs was Mister Doggy; He lived to 20+ years of age but the last one he was blind and spent most of his day in bed. Finally had a seizure one night and was gone in the morning. He was the Best companion, home guard and loving waggy tailed companion anyone could ever ask for. (Did I forget to mention "SMART" ?)
May your Bella rest in Peace.
Pamela

A friend has a dachshund with the same name. They lost their other Dachshund two weeks ago and got another two days ago. They also have a cat.

Sorry for your loss. I have a cat that's nine years old.
