Have bought my first #1, 47 years old looks factory new in 220 swift having grouping issues! Red butt pad, possible Douglas barrel. Been hand loading for 50 years and can't get a five shot group under under 3". Have tried four different bullets (50 & 55 gr), five powders with not much success. What now? Thanks in advance.

Welcome aboard!

Welcome from the southeastern USA!
In reference to your 220 Swift #1, have you checked your chamber and barrel for erosion? Also have you slugged the barrel to determine the best bullet diameter?

Greetings from Sparks, NV. Good shootin' to ya and STAY SAFE!

Welcome from the Badger State.
I had a M77 Mark II in .220 Swift, laminated stock with the 26" heavy barrel, I bought new back around 1999 or so. I stared off with factory ammo, then started reloading for it, I feel like I tried every bullet weigh powder combo I could find. I never got it to shoot as good as I would have liked. best I was ever able to get out of it was 3.5" groups at 250 yards

Thanks for the input, bore scoped chamber and barrel looks new, rifling sharp with no erosion. Appears to spent its lift in the back of the safe.

Hello and welcome to the forum! I have a No. 1 from 1977 that did not group well. I am not sure where, but I came across a tip to insert a rubber washer between the forearm hanger and the barrel. Another tip is to make sure not to overtighten the forearm screw. Once I inserted a rubber washer, my groups tightened up a lot. It's not a tack driver but I have yet to miss what I aim at.

There is also a device called the Hicks Accurizer: https://eabco.com/hicks-1-accurizer/

Finally, I am not sure how involved you are willing to become, but there is also this page on free-floating the barrel:

Thank you, already tried the washer. Been researching old forms for information and a piece of rubber between the barrel and forearm has been done, but I will most likely by the Hicks for Christmas and bed the forearm. I know it will not be as good as my 6GT, but why not try.

Welcome from the Colorado gun guy. This is a great forum for gun information and shooting discussions but you’ll notice a few folks use this Ruger forum to comment on all manner of social and political concerns. Try to ignore them and stay on gun topics and you’ll have lots a great conversations.
