Good Day At The Range

I just purchased a 5 1/2" stainless Ruger Bisley .45 colt a couple a weeks ago. I assembled 150 rounds at my bench last night, 50 rounds 255 grain Missouri Cast SWC's over 7.6 grains of Unique, 50 rounds 250 grain Hornady XTP's over 9.3 grains of Unique, and 50 rounds 300 grain Hornady XTP's over 16.5 grains of 2400. All loads shot within 3 1/2 " at 25 yards with the 300 grain loads being the most accurate. I shot the cast bullets first figuring that I would have a lot of lead to remove from the bore. I was pleasantly surprised, there was absolutely no lead in the bore! I previously had to use a wooden dowel and a hammer to push a bullet through the chamber throats, so I figured I would have a lot of lead fouling, but there was none. After firing 2 cylinders full of each load at paper, I put the paper targets away, and commenced to shooting clay targets at 50 yards from a sitting position with the gun resting on my knees. Again the robust 300 grain loads were the most accurate with many smoked clay birds...what fun!

I shoot a lot of 38 Special, 9MM and 45 ACP, so when I read about "robust 300 grain loads" my eyebrows go up. That must be a lot of fun -- especially at the clay birds!

I hear 'ya! 300 to 335 gr. (.44 and .45 cal.) cast bullets are my favorites. I can usually find a hillside full of rocks "just about ready" to roll off the top. A little coaxing with a "large bore" bullet results in unmeasurable entertainment.

My cloths smelled like burnt gunpowder all day yesterday. Not an especially pleasant smell but I can live with it.
