Gonna replace these grips

Hogue finger groove grips run a bit smaller than the Pachmayrs... for about $20, you could give them a try.

If they don't work out, you can usually peddle them in near new condition at a minimal loss... but that may be more of a problem up there in the boondocks.

The Hogue finger groove grips I bought to try out on my BFR (which has a SBH size grip frame) felt HUGE compared to the stock Uncle Mikes (basically like the Pachmayr). The spread my fingers way out and the palm swell was just too much. I bought the model that was for the square trigger guard SBH.

I would NOT recommend those for you if you have short fingers.

I think I'd get some Bearpaw Grips or something similar to a gunfighter style that is thicker at the top and thinner, with no flare, at the bottom. The bottom of the grip should be flat with no bevel (like you have on stock grips).

Agree; this is my experience also.

Most grips are too big for me, honestly.. so it is nuthin new.
I really prefer a more traditional grip on my single action. The bite of my gun has me concerned a bit though.. and I think a grip a bit thicker up top would work a bit better.
My Biz grips are more comfortable.
With my short fingers I don't want to compromise my grip on the gun while cocking it....
Does anybody make a factory size rubber grip?? Not like the ones I have, with all the filler... just panels..
The grips on "Thumper", where on her when I bought her, and I've just never changed them....

Though the current standard stocks are often called "hard rubber" harkening back to the old Colt SAA gutta percha days, they are more accurately a plastic--and the subject of much derision here--but they will fill the bill of "factory size" - and not only that but are not as chunky as most factory wooden "Reds." Much of the unhappiness with these is the oft-described "cheese grater" character - overly aggressive checkering for many folks. However, with about ten minutes "elbow grease" of 00/000 wool over a waste basket will tone them down considerably, knocking down the sharp points but leaving--to varying degrees depending on time spent "sanding"--some checkering for grip. This also leaves a less sheeny-plasticky, more "hard rubber" finish that can be felt. (We're talking degrees here).. while still looking new. I've done this to several BH's and NVs, and have found it easier to actually take the extra time/care to do it on the gun--masking off the metal as well as Ruger emblem and allready smooth grip edges. This way gives me a better handle to do some rigorous but targeted sanding. Total project time for the two panels, including careful masking, about 45 minutes. YMMV.

Not trying to over-extol the virtues of these grips--clearly not everyones' cup of tea (I have customs too for "enjoying" but these make for some good "rough condition-working" grips). I gather you may be looking for something "softer" but still factory size, but this may possibly be a cheap solution for you with readily available grips.

Edit - I have heard some reference here but not seen for myself - current Ruger checkered plastics are coming with a less aggressive checkering. Again, don't know how true.

I bought this gun used with the pachs on them.
before I moved to Alaska I never carried a .44 daily...
And the grips work fine for hunting, or target work, but they are very slow....
They are very secure... secure enough to break the skin on my palm..
I'm concerned about "excess" slipping on other more factory type grips though. I'm sure I can manage the recoil itself, I just want to be able to maintain my handle on the gun without having to start over every time with adjusting my grip on the gun.
Maybe that is to tall an order in this case. I shoot "Alaska Backpacker 320gr", and the are fairly stout.
However without trying different grips I guess I'll really never know huh!
Maybe I better take a look at the Sturm Ruger site!....

I'm thinking you should have the gun fitted with a Bisley grip frame. 320 gr! It's hurting me thru the keyboard.

Thats what I'd like to do, but it is way out of my price range.....

Single action will roll in you hand. Rubber, Pachs or Hogues with not slip and cause your wrist to absorb the recoil.

Don't fight the recoil. Let it do what it's going to do.

JMHO after firing more big rounds than I can afford today. :D

You might want to look at the Bearpaw grips.... Works very well for me as I have short stubby fingers!

Here is a couple on two of my .45s :

I've only shoot up to 1300fps (.44Mag 240g SWCs) with these grips and I didn't have a problem other than the usual knuckle rap.

www.privatescustomgrips.com , he does the exact profile you describe and uses a flat bottom cut. They will be the same thickness throughout and he does great work. He's also a member here. They fit my hand great. His holly would look great on your SBH.

I have experienced haing my palm torn shooting heavy loads due to the pach's not sliding in my hand, that is few sure. But that was after extended shooting and my grip wsn't probably as firm as it was when I started out...
I like pachs but they are always too big, unless I get the "small" version. Even so I think wood grips would really go best on Thumper anyhow...

I bookmarked the grip, site.. they look good! I think I'll give him a jingle.....

Though flat bottom (oddly to me) seems to be the default with gripmkers today, Carl (and I assume Cary, etc) will shape them however you want. I've had my several customs done with the canted or beveled bottoms -- per stock Colts and Rugers as far back as I can remember. I like the option of easy pinky under, but my hands are medium-small enough I don't have to either - depends on my mood of the day - so works both ways...and I like the look too. I woulda thought the default would be toward the standard factory beveled grip bottoms, but not so (must be a lot more of the larger hands out there these days) ...so, make sure you let them know if you want the canted bottoms! (ie, that you don't want the flat bottoms).

Honestly, I never considered having the bottom of the grip beveled or relieved in any way, until you just mentioned it!..... That is more to take into account!.....
It qould sure give me better purchase for the pinky finger....

Colt/Ruger chamfer on a set of Carl's hollys. Love 'em.
