I have been around this old rock for a long time and have met many many people. As a whole most seemed to be generally positive in their outlooks. I however, have noticed on theses 'pages', that there are a number of individuals that always seem to see the 'glass half empty'. They appear to have a negative outlook on most everything, no matter how trivial. Just wondering if I am the only person seeing that trend.

From time to time we should all take a break from Politics for a few days or, maybe put someone on “Ignore”.

And for full disclosure, I’m probably more guilty of doing that than I’d like to admit.

I’ve definitely noticed this, as well. I think it’s gotten noticeably worse the past few years.

Staying out of the “Gun Control and Other Political Issues” sub-forum is a good start at avoiding much of the negativity. Still, sometimes it’s like a bad accident- I just have to look!

I’ve also seen certain folks go from a generally pleasant, helpful poster to consistently bitter and venomous. A couple of them made me wonder what else is going on in their life. There’s also the specter of personality change from dementia to consider. I’m not saying that to be cruel, but most of us aren’t spring chickens anymore, and personality change can be one of the indicators of oncoming dementia.

I went through that with my Dad, though he actually mellowed with his dementia. Kind of a rare treat/silver lining, in his case. :?

I guess I've probably noticed this a long time ago, but didn't really give it much thought until you brought it up. Not sure if it's the last political election, or the pandemic and the associated ammo / gun shortage or what.

I hope I haven't been too negative. I'll have to go back and think about my posts. Life is too short to rant about unnecessary things. My wife does a good job of keeping me positive.

And staying out of the political section helps a lot! For the record, I do NOT post anything there. Sometimes, it's funny to go and read everyone's crackpot theories etc.

Speaking of gasoline. How long before we see $5 a gal.? More problems than Katrina caused with this hurricane today.

This is from 6-4-21: Schlafer's Auto Body & Repair in Mendocino, California, is charging $6.73 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline, which gives it the distinction of being the single most expensive gas station in the entire country, according to a gas-tracking app.

There is a Chevron station in downtown L.A. that is always $1-2 more than everywhere else. This was February.

I’m also of the opinion that adults should be able to disagree, without being disagreeable. :idea:

I'm sorry, I do not understand the difference.

Omission of comment implies acceptance of the subject/comment, or that you
did not see the comment. A reply states your opinion.
That does NOT mean or imply that you should not be polite
while expressing your opinion.

A lot of folks are just naturally prone to see things in a pessimistic light, I count myself as one of them. Most times we keep a pretty good handle on it. However recently there has been a lot of doom and gloom that is hitting people daily in this world. For a lot of folks it ain't what crap how big or how little that is hitting the fan. Just the fact that it's hitting the fan that sours their mood. Without even taken into account the unknown personal crap hitting the fan in someones life we are all dealing with way more public crap hitting the fan than we ever thought we would.

Some folks have a hard time living by the things could be worse mantra. Don't take in personal when someone is a bit ugly over something trivial. Most likely they are not upset about that but more so that it was the tenth or maybe twentieth thing that got under their skin today.

Not saying it's right or an excuse but it is a very real explanation in a lot of cases.

My life and what little I have left of it is really really good and I am happy... but I kind of agree with the OP. Some folk's here, especially over in the political cease pool really need to get a life..... just like with most of the news they have a on going philosophy:

I have a friend who is a bit of a philosopher: When he wakes each day, he looks in the mirror, and says (out loud): "You have to make a decision right now; you are going to be happy today; or you are going to be miserable. What's it gonna be?"

One could write a book about this, and I see the problem everywhere I go, not just on this forum or others.

One thing that really bothers me is the third alternative to the condition of the glass that's become too much a part of the conversation: that's the "Who drank half my..." generally accompanied by some crackpot theory nobody can seem to put an end to.

Hi,

Omission of comment could be as simple as silently saying "What you have to say isn't worth comment." As attributed to John Morley about a century ago, "You have not converted a man because you have silenced him." I think Mr. Morley borrowed that from someone maybe a century before him...

I often find myself in a variety of venues saying nothing instead of "You're full of (manure)." Does that sound like I've accepted what the person had to say? I don't think so...

I too have noticed the decline in attitudes, not just here but elsewhere. From seeing no good at all to outrageous statements. Some people are just miserable and need to share it with others.

I ignore them. They don't control my happiness and I am incapable of improving their lives. Life is too short to waste on perpetually negative people.

I started to answer this, and didn't. In fact I thought about it throughout the night. The problem with your question is, it's very subjective. What you consider being "better" someone else might not and vice-a-versa. There are just so many people in the US or the World that whose to say what's "better." ?

Take the Olympics, some people would consider it a great success. Others not so much. So there could be a whole laundry list of "improvements" since January and one person or another would consider them "better" while another would not. That is the great thing about where we live, everyone has a voice. But just because you or I might not agree with them doesn't make them wrong. They could say the same thing about our opinions.

In the end, being "better" is just an opinion. The stock market is up since January 2021. That's certainly better for a lot of people, but I'm sure someone would complain. Apple has better faster iPad's out and a new phone coming out soon. Is that "better"? Depends upon who you ask. Kids are back in school, not widespread e-learning like last year. Better? That's your call.
