GP100,
As long as I can wake up every morning along with my wife, and go shooting,
The rest doesn't matter. Me and my Double stack 9MM and Joan and her
LC9s we are happy.

I got a present of two heart stents this last Christmas. Doctors said another half hour wait and I would have had the big one. It has taken a lot out of me to the point I get so weak after a little exertion that I am ashamed of myself. When I was young I was strong but now know I have to pack as I couldn't fight my way out of a wet paper sack anymore. (Just turned 76). In the last few years I have also developed "The shakes", especially in my left arm/hand. Need to take up gold panning as all I would have to do is just try to hang on the pan. It`s a family thing as my dad, and I understand my grand dad had the same thing. I have always been lazy but now I got a reason. My wife takes good care of me. She`s almost 17 years younger. At the moment she`s outside laying down 85 concrete stepping stones. I may go out now and cheer her on. I may need my snub to defend myself from her!

Bill, you a cradle robber...... Good on you!
I'm at stage 3 in my life. A few beers helps relieve the aches and pains. Yes I do attend Church on a regular basis. My views are slightly different than the hard core southern Baptist one I attend. Surprising how many members have admitted to me they also have a drink or two.
It does get harder to perform like when we were 25. I still go at it like I'm 30, it's just my way.
Promised myself and family I would slow down this year, not there yet but soon.
Great post, I will show this to friends, if you don't mind.

Actually what took more out of me was about ten years ago I had my nose removed due to cancer. I don't know if it was a physical or mental thing or both. I recovered from that and then took a fall and broke a rack of ribs. Then a knee surgery and now the heart stents. A couple months ago a bad kidney stone. Had about four of them through the years. I just finished four months of cardio rehab. I feel pretty good but get out of breath etc with a little activity. Getting old doesn't cross your mind when young. It`s a old saying, but true. If I knew I was going to live this long I would have took better care of myself!

I knew I was getting old when a doctor less than half my age told me to start using Metamucil.

Well I'm in pretty good shape for the shape I'm in. I think God everyday for my relatively good health - but I've been dealing with atrial fibrillation for 20plus years. I'm 70y/o now and I swear my body declared war on me this year - and I think it's won a couple of skirmishes. Years ago when my mother went on Social Security, I got her a little book titled "Old Age Is Not For Sissies" - a lot of truth in that.

Hi...
At 62 years old, I am not quite as old as some who have posted here but I think I know a bit about getting older and the effects thereof.
I am currently recovering from my third bout with cancer, I have been declared terminal twice, have survived around seven major surgeries, two strokes, 70 radiation treatments and a six month regimen of chemotherapy last year. I have spent too much time using a wheelchair and have lived on a feeding tube for several months after having a portion of my tongue removed due to salivary gland cancer in 2012.
Currently working my way through recovering from the chemo treatments and the Burkitt's -like Lymphoma that I was treated for.
I still am unable to return to work...my health insurance won't authorize the PET-scan my doctor insists is required before she will release me to return to work. So, I have to wait until sometime in July when my insurance company will authorize the test. Meantime, I continue to try to rebuild my strength and stamina, but it is tough to do when you are under weight lifting restrictions (10 lbs) and become fatigued easily.
I have been off work since last June on disability and haven't yet regained the strength necessary to even reload any ammunition.
It is frustrating considering at one time I could curl 90lbs with my right arm.
So, yeah, I know about getting old and the challenges it provides.

357supermag, my prayers and thoughts.
I am 4 years younger than you. No surgeries. Oh well there was that thing about my heart about 15+ years ago. Doctors evaluated me and gave me a 50/50 chance of living 5 more years without a transplant. Dang thing looked like an old tire about to blow out. Them doctor folk said my heart was 50% bigger than normal (cardio myopathy).
Well I didn't have any procedure done. Went with reduced work, meds and lots of folk praying for me. Them educated folk said I would never get better, well I outlived most of them and for the last two years my ticker is still big but working normally.

Your story is bold and inspirational. You will be in my nightly prayers.
I cannot imagine going through what you have. You are a very tough and admirable person. Please keep the faith, it works. I wish there was some way I could share your troubles/pain. Thank you for sharing, my small aches and pains are gone when thinking about your story..... I feel ashamed at my little problems.

Keep up the good fight and GOD bless.

Rick

But of course. Feel free to show it around.

Seems this kind of post is getting more and more common on the Forum, and I must admit I have started a few myself. Even when we see aging all around us, most of us think it somehow won't happen to us personally. I turn 74 in a few weeks, and I have my share of complaints, both old and new, but I must admit that I feel pretty lucky most of the time. I get tired easier than I used to, my feet hurt me pretty much all of the time(arthritis and gout), and living with only one kidney has added a few new challenges, but I still can get out and ride my Honda Goldwing. I still get to be with and hold onto my bride of 51 years, and I am lucky to say that all of my five kids are relatively OK as are my 12 grandkids. But aging affects us in ways I would not have imagined when I was younger. There was a time when I thought life equaled sex, and thought when sex goes, life might as well end right then and there. Well, like a lot of things I have found that life is more valuable regardless of what losses we have, and I am not anxious to move to the brown side of the grass. But I just had to have three dead pine trees cut down between my house and the road, and have to recognize that it doesn't make much sense for me to plant new ones because I am not likely to see them grow to any decent size (so I am planting tall grasses instead to fill in the space). I had to have my roof re-done recently, and told the roofer to stop pushing for 30 year shingles at a higher cost because the 20 year shingles were likely more than I really need anyway. And against my better judgment I find I do read the obituary page, and grimace every time I see someone younger than myself listed as having died. I also find I have a lot less desire to buy any new guns, and laugh at my stockpile of ammunition that probably will outlast me.

I think I have been at stage #4 now for over 35 years. Had heart attack in 1981 with bypass surgery then a redo in 1988, a stint in 2001 another in 2010 and 2011. And have had both shoulders replaced so no more pain there. I will be 77 in a couple months and I feel good most of the time but tire out easy. Now if my wife was just old enough to retire maybe she would stop bitching at me to do more.

I have to buy green bananas as I don't like ripe ones.

Have you considered that after retirement, she'll be home full time - and be able to find even more to complain about?

I always considered "over the hill" to be when you got your third invitation to join the AARP.

Funny you should say that...

I just got my second invite to join AARP.. Wanna hear the funny thing about that? I'm only 49.. I'm not old enough to join yet..

My only conclusion I can draw from this, is that it's Medicare linked.. They must get a list of people on Medicare and send them mail..

Here's the kicker.. My doctor's told me I have very little time left.. Bone Cancer, coupled with Kidney Failure. (Only 1 kidney left) Followed by Congestive heart Failure, and Liver Damage.. Not to mention an infection that has been trying to kill me for over a year. It's gone septic and damn near killed me..

I should have been dead almost a year ago.. Yet, I'm still here.. Suffering every day in mortal pain and agony from it all.. By the way, My Doctor died a short time ago.. I outlived him, and he was in pretty good health until recently..

They keep telling me my time is running out.. I don't mind crapping out. It's the getting there part that bugs me..

I just don't like suffering all the time.. If I'm gonna drop dead, let's do this thing already. I'm tired of waiting for an appointment with the grim reaper. Either crap, or get off the pot.. Why the hell am I still here? What? so I can suffer like a bad joke?

Screw that. I look the grim reaper in the eye and say, "Let's dance." I'm not afraid of death.. I dated his sister, and hoped he would put me out of my misery..

Death smiles at us all.. Some of us have the balls to smile back..

I guess I'm just old and bitter nowadays.. I'm just one sneeze away from blowing out a heart valve. And the warranty ran out.. Screw em' if they can't take a joke.

Don't mind me.. I'm just moody lately..

When she retires she will have time to do it all by herself.
