I'll lead off with a partial quote of mine from a previous post in a thread in which some members seemed to believe that many if not all LEO's are clueless regarding the art of shooting.

"In spite of what some others who have posted in this thread seem to believe, there are still a lot of folks wearing that uniform who were accomplished shooters prior to taking the LEO career path, and then get even better as they go along. Percentage wise, they are not common enough, but they are there. For over ten years I worked with a fellow officer, who was among the best I ever knew in every phase of his job. After I moved on and left that duty station, he went on to be named the NRA Man of the Year one year due to having won more than one National PPC Title. Until you know a little about the man or woman, you don't know who is behind that badge. Could be Forrest Gump, Bill Jordan, or anyone in between."

Well now in Garland, Texas, a traffic officer armed with only his service handgun shoots dead two perps, who purportedly were wearing body armor and banging away at him and his partner with assault rifles. The SWAT team arrived on scene very quickly, but the perps were already down for the ten count. How many lives did that officer and his handgun save while going up against what most would consider to be insurmountable odds?

As I said before:

"Until you know a little about the man or woman, you don't know who is behind that badge. Could be Forrest Gump, Bill Jordan, or anyone in between."

I've only seen bits and pieces about this excellent turn of events. I suspect the officer involved was capable of
some top notch marksmanship, and it sounds like he used his skills to the benefit of a whole lot of grateful people.
The facts imply head shots, thereby avoiding the perps' body armor completely.

It goes without saying that, now, this fine officer will have to grow eyes in the back of his head, as he surely
just skyrocketed to the top of the lunatic jihadis hit list. This officer saved countless innocent people's lives.

If management in the Garland PD is up to snuff, his name will not be made public, he will be assigned alternate duties for a while in order to allow him time to process the situation while the investigation runs its course, and then be quietly moved into hopefully, an assignment of his own choosing. I have known of instances where LEO's involved in shooting situations were left totally unnamed. It can be done with a little cooperation from the DA's office.

I hope we never know who the officer was because I believe that would be best for him. It would appear having body armor & superior weaponry is not a substitute for having training & a cool head. These men got what they deserved. We owe a debt of gratitude to the officers involved.

I only know our little local LEO's. I shoot with them several times a year. Most are ex-serviceman and well taught. Only questionable ones are right out of training. Military trained police officers should be the norm. I trust them.

I saw the best news headline a while ago. It says a lot, with so few words;

" Muhammad cartoon contest: Note to jihadists, in America, we shoot back "

That said, I have discussed LEO's & their abilities with firearms, with training officers & school instructors.
In general, it is believed only about 15%-20% of the LEO's are very proficient with their firearms. That leaves 80% who NEED more work.
BUT,,,,,,,,, time for training,,,,,,,, FUNDS to train them,,,,,,,,,,, PLACES to shoot & train properly,,,,,,,,combined with the low qualification standards for most departments is to blame for a lot of those issues.

In the small, rural municipal P.D. I served with, in the 1980's, all four of us had been avid recreational shooters before we were hired, one was also former military police and Viet. vet, and another was former Special Forces. I was in good company.

Last I heard, one of the good guys in the car was an unarmed security guard, who was shot in the leg right at the get go. It was one patrolman armed with a handgun against two islamis using assault rifles and body armor.

God was surely with him!
