FUDD?

Anyone hearing this term being thrown around?

I knew it was insulting. I looked it up and I think it’s me!

It refers to Elmer Fudd. It’s used to describe a person who likes old guns with wood stocks. It may imply just for hunting.

I have hunted, but have trained for self defense more than anything. So maybe I’m not one?

Are we Fudds? Should we be proud of it?

In recent years, I've seen the term used as an insult (along with "boomer" ;^) by younger people, who seem mostly ignorant of anything they haven't "learned" on TikTok or maybe experienced personally. I remember one young guy throwing insults around, who thought the 6.5mm Creedmoor was the first cartridge ever developed "specifically for competition", and another who thought the 10mm auto was the penultimate handgun cartridge, making anything with similar (or even better!) performance "obsolete" (and that's a quote). Even now, the phrase "bag of hammers" comes to mind!

The funniest one (IMHO) was a guy who blamed fudds and boomers for the gun & ammunition shortages during the China virus lockdown; I had to point out that (in my area at least) it was the boomers who were keeping most of the gun shops open, by SELLING their extra guns & ammo to FFLs who couldn't get either from their regular distributors. And most of the people I saw in the gun stores trying to BUY guns & ammo were in the 20-40 age group, not boomers - most of the older crowd had lived through previous panics and shortages, and were in fine shape, having learned a lesson or two and "stocked up" before the lockdown occurred...

EDIT: I traded some of my spare ARs (that were in high demand & short supply) to an FFL during the lockdown, for some nice revolvers - guess the younger folks desperately looking to buy firearms didn't want "wheel guns", because they were "obsolete" (and not 10mm ;^)!

A "fudd" is a person who doesn't care if certain guns are banned and confiscated, as long as it isn't THEIR preferred type of gun.

Lots of members on the shotgun world forum endorse bans on "assault weapons" because they don't expect their sporting clays guns will be at risk.

My brother in law is a Fudd, he shoots a Browning BAR 270 but does not approve of my AR10 in 308 because it looks like a machine gun.

I know a few myself, they're naive and obtuse as they come. And, frequently make absurd comments like "Just let 'em ban those damn assault weapons of war! Then they'll leave the rest of us alone."
Cannot get through to them that if you give the gun prohibition crowd an inch, they'll take a mile. And...Then keep coming back, for more and more until their goal of total civilian disarmament is achieved.
Nor, that the 2nd amendment wasn't written to protect hunting, that it covers ALL types of firearms, whether you personally like or want them or not.

that's what has happened. they've been given way more than an inch and it just gives them the power and incentive to take more.
No once has ever won a war by taking a defensive position, the only way you win is by going on the offense. I know this and I'm a peace loving pinko that has no want to attack or fight anybody..... but I know this is true.

The odd thing is even in the gun world people want to take sides and put down other gun owners...

Being an Old man having spent hundreds of hours on a 500 yd range with a M1 Garand.
Plenty of big bore handgun hunting & silhouette shooting and passing a police range qualification with .357 Sig, 10mm & .45acp pistols many times. I do know how to shoot. I have enough martial arts to wreck a foolish person and enough common sense and street sense to recognize bad situations developing.

I've referred to my BIL as 'FUDDLEY' or 'Uncle Fudd' for decades-- a few times right to his face. It all started when he showed up wearing an Elmer Fudd ear flap cap but he really does fit the moniker.
We don't talk much anymore.

I tend to have fuddish tastes (wood and steel) in guns myself, and jokingly refer to myself as a fudd on occasion, but I am in no way a supporter of gun control.

Would love to have an AR but sadly I'm too poor even for PSA right now. And while I'm in no way a fan of Glocks, I'd really like to have a Ruger RXM or Springer Echelon; I've handled both and love how they feel in the hand. Walther's new PDP is pretty swank, too, but spare mags are expensive for those.
