Front sight question

I have read that when shortening a barrel from 7.5" to 5.5", it is recommended to install a taller front sight. I can appreciate the trigonometry of this but when I look at pictures of Rugers with the two barrel lengths, the front sights seem the same. Also the parts list in the manuals don't seem to indicate a different sight. Can the rear sight adjust for this difference?

A lot depends upon what ammo you are shooting.

Contender is right. It often depends on the ammunition. In general though you'll need a taller front sight for a shorter sight radius.

The front sight on my Blackhawk .357 with 4.625 in barrel is .073 in. higher than the sight on my Blackhawk .357 with a 6.5 in. barrel.

The difference in the front sight height for different length barrels is probably not enough to see in photos. You may have enough adjustment in the rear sight but it may not adjust downward enough. As was said above, it will depend on the loads you shoot. But generally the gun will shoot a little higher with the shorter long barrel sight when used on a shorter barrel.
