I am wanting to have a holster made for my 44 special flattop but the maker only has a mold for the NM Blackhawk. I dont know if that would work. Are the frames different on these guns. Thanks

Yes, the NM BH is built on the large frame and the .44 Spcl flattop is built on the mid sized frame. Not a lot of difference, but enough to affect the holster fit.

yessir, once again, the "new" New model Rugers are driving grip as well as holster makers "CRAZY".............just what each model is anymore is a crap shoot, we have guys bring their gun to the gun show , just to "see" and try, whatever they may be looking for....buy it on a "guess" and they will bring it back, and some 'dealers' (table holders) do NOT "return, nor refund"....... we do......

Then does that mean the 44mag Flattop is made on the NM Blackhawk frame? I am seeing why it is been hard to get a holster done

All .44 Mags are large frame, the flattop differing only in its smaller (midframe XR3) gripframe, not really a factor with most holsters. All other recent (decades') flattops are the smaller Colt-sized midframe.

It's not too bad - there are two basic sizes: large frame (above .44 Mag comments, "regular" (non-flattop) NM Blackhawks and SBHs, original/"old" Vaqueros). All other recent centerfire NM Ruger SAs--non .44 Mag flattops and New Vaqueros--should take the same holsters as similar barrel-length Colt SAA and New Frontier centerfire guns.

You'll be happier if you try the Flattop in the holster of choice before you buy. What some consider an OK fit might not satisfy you.

As an example, my El Paso Tom Threepersons holster made for the Colt SAA does not quite fit my .44 Lipsey Special even tho' the frames are similar in size. It goes in "almost" far enough, but not far enough to use the safety strap.

On the other hand, it fits my Red Dog leather perfectly. Some holsters will allow you to "wet fit" to accept a larger frame but you really need some experience with doing this before I would recommend it.

Try it before you buy it...

+1 Good advice. I've had some holsters supposedly tailor-made for the large frame--but very snug--fit a mid-frame pretty well, and the vice-versa can be true also.

Now I understand why I have been having a hard time finding a good holster for my 44 special. Does anyone have a info on who is building holsters for this gun?

Now....the FT 41 Mg. is a medium fame? And the 30 Carbine is too?

Nope... 41 and 30 Carbine are large frame. You will see some medium frame 41s.. They are customs.

OK, so if I buy a flat top Blackhawk in .41 Mg., available from Williams Shooters Supply, it will be a large frame gun (super Blackhawk size) ?

I over-generalized. Thanks for correcting.

There are a number that hang out here,...also Cochise Leather, El Paso Leather, Kirkpatrick, Reddog, a bunch of 'em. Do a RF and Google search. Holster making for the large frame Rugers is actually very commonplace as to gun type,... and increasingly so on the mid-frames since the 2005(ish) intro of the New Vaquero then later flattops. A good leather-man or gal will first ask which frame and maybe whether fixed or adjustable sights (and bbl length of course), and it's pretty straightforward from that point on.

Bob Mernickle made this one for me. My gun is a Three-Screw .357 Mag rebuilt to .44 Special:

Incidentally, my New Model .45 Colt Blackhawk works pretty well with this holster, also.

P.S. If you do decide to order, advise Bob at the time if you have the crescent ejector rod head.
