I never served in the military but my dad served I WW2. Navy aboard USS Bennington and the Tripoli. Would it be in bad taste to honor my dad by flying the Navy flag?

It is never in bad taste to honor anyone. And flying a flag in his honor is a most fitting tribute.

Speaking as a vet and as someone who worked with vets for many years, I would say that it would not be in bad taste at all. You are honoring him.

Hi,
I fly an American flag by itself 24/7/365. I don't have anyone in particular to honor with their service flag (Navy covers most of my lost friends), but if I were to do so, I think I'd fly both flags, observing the proper etiquette Bob Wright mentioned. The neighborhood does have a few Marine Corps flags, and all of them I can think of are flown below the American flag on a freestanding pole out in the yard.

Nothing wrong at all flying the Navy flag for any reason, especially honoring your father.
