First Ruger-Speed Six

Finally purchased my first Ruger, a Speed Six , dated 1983, from Summit Gun Broker. I'm very pleased. I field-stripped it using download from Ruger website. I'm amazed at how easy it was. Great design. I plan to use it as my woods/hiking carry piece. Chose it over a S&W 65 ( and I own two Smiths, a 28-2, 6" and a 10-5 pencil barrel). I hand load so I'll try it out first w/ some .38spl and once I get used to it I'll move up to heavier loads. I see now why folks love these guns. Very pleased indeed.[/i][/b]

That's a mighty nice lookin gun. My Dad recommended one of these to me back in the late 70's/early 80's, but I wasnt pursuaded. Man, now I dream of the six's.

I have two like that (although one is mis-stamped "Police Service Six") and they are fast becoming my favorites.

The 4" Speed Sixes are less common than the 2 3/4". A nice clean one is getting to be hard to find. Way to go!

Great looking Speed Six Zachary. The Security/Service/Speed Six line is the most underrated revolver ever made. Stronger than a Smith K frame. Was design to shoot 357s. The K frame Smith was really a 38 special revolver modified to shoot 357s on occasion. And also the Speed Six is a very close to the weight and size of a K frame Smith. The handling is almost like the Smith. Below is my Police Service Six 4 in barrel. I consider this revolver my best all round revolver over my Smiths and my Ruger GP100.

Is your speed six a 3" barrel type which was produced for the postal service? If so, it is a tad rare.I have one which is a great shooter, not 96-100% but a good shooter and for what I paid fot it well worth it..

It is the 3 inch barrel but it doesn't say Postal Service on it. I bought it used (Boise gun show) and I have neither the box nor any history. I guess that I could check the history with Ruger but it never dawned on me until now.

As you noted, it is a darn good shooter too. We are both lucky to have them. But it is a little heavier than my 4 inch Security Six.

I liked the round butt and brushed surface.
