Several years ago a friend sold me a NIB unfired Ruger 10/22 magnum. I say "sold", but it really was more like dangling crack in front of an addict - I did what I had to do and sold myself out for that fix.

The rifle sat untouched in my safe until last weekend when I pulled it out and set it up properly. First step, break it down and pull out the left side extractor, replace the right side extractor with a Volquartsen Exact Edge extractor, and install a bolt recoil buffer. Next step, mount a Leupold Vari-X IIc that I bought from my Dad's buddy a few years ago. Then boresighted it in the hallway at home.

Yesterday I took it to a 25-yd indoor range to sight it in using basic WallyWorld Winchester Dynapoint (JHP) ammo. Results are shown below. Sighting in began with the lower left target, proceeded counter-clockwise then confirmed with the 9-shot ragged hole one inch above the center bullseye.

I think I'll leave it just as it is, other than tuning the abysmal trigger. Will add picture of the rifle later tonight.

They are not common, not built for very long, NOT cheap any more. I want one. Recoil buffer is a must in any 10/22 but why the extractor? Is it more of a problem on the WMR? I know people put them in the LR too but don't know why (on a new gun).

Sweet piece. Thanks for sharing 10/22 porn.

All the Interwebz wisdom says to remove the left side extractor on the two-extractor models, and many suggest replacing the right-side one with the ExactEdge version. When you lay an ExactEdge next to the stock extractor, the difference in geometry is obvious. For $18, I figured "why not?".

The reason Ruger went to the "dual extactor" in later guns was due to complaints with the early versions.

The bad part is - the issue could have been easily resolved with just a better made extractor... ala Scott Volquartsen's Exact Edge.

The inside extractor proved to have too much play and there were one or two reports of it causing damage to the tungsten bolt, so most owners removed it as a precaution.

They are very nice rifles and even better with a better (IMO) stock.

Bolt Buffer.... looks like those for the standard 10/22 but needs a bit of back-up (pad behind the buffer) if you try to use one for the 10/22.

My buffer is home-made from 1/4" OD fuel line with an inner pin made from drill rod. It has stood up well and the tubing is easy to replace should it become too abraded.

The OEM extractor is just as good as any of the after market one out there. The problem with failures to extract or eject is the FIT of the extractor to the bolt. The extractor has to hold the spent cartridge case tight to the bolt face until the bolt recoils back far enough to allow the ejector to kick the case out the ejection port.

Perhaps fit is why the OEM extractors often performed so poorly, but since the replacements cured that ill without additional fitting, I must still disagree about the OEM being just as good.

With a bit of file work, the OEM can be made more reliable, but it does not come from the factory well contoured. Many folks have had good luck making this type of mod.

The mod you show will help with extracting unfired rounds from a match chambered barrel.

I have bought most of the after market extractors to test them. Some were no better, some worse than the OEM.

Any extractor must hold the spent case tightly against the bolt face. The extractor should cam out 0.010" to 0.015" when you slide a case under it.
