Firefox update, and I dislike it

I've been using Firefox as my web browser,,, and last night,,, it did an automatic update. I was actually on the computer,,, in & out of the web, and all of a sudden,,, it installed it's update.
After that,,, a lot of stuff is different,,, and harder to navigate.
(1) I no longer have a "bookmark" icon to go directly to my bookmarks. I have to click on an icon that brings up a menu where I can hit "bookmark" and then I get my list of bookmarks.
(2) Once there,,, they are jumbled up, in no order,, and no way to re-arrange them. I now have to hunt for the ones I use often,,, like the ruger forum.
(3) I had a few different files of bookmarks,, and guess what,, I can not find one file.

So,,, I dislike "google" due to their bombardment of pop-up ads, and the spam created by things that are linked to stuff I may look at.

My question is this; What is a good browser,, that is EASY to work with? One that doesn't make you go through 10 steps to do something that should take just one or two?

And yes,,, I'm an old curmudgeon who hates change,, and once I learn how to do something,,, I want it to stay that way,,, or if it's going to update itself,,, make the changes where it's even easier to navigate,,, not harder.
(And if that's not bad enough,,, I have an Iphone,,, that did an update the other night. It changed my voicemail to where I no longer have "transcription" of the voicemail. I liked that feature,,, as I'd have customers call & leave messages,,, and the phone numbers were plain to see & get. We spent almost 2 hours taking to our service provider,,, then iphone tech support, and none of the 3 people we got could fix it. And they changed a numerical password,,, that I now have to try hard to remember. )
 
I'm betting that somewhere in the settings or toolbar adjustments, there is a way to put the bookmarks button back where you want it...

If that does not work, I assume that there is an extension/add-on that puts the bookmarks button back...

In Chrome and it's clones, I use 'Neater Bookmarks' to add a bookmarks button...

My favorite 'new' browser lately is SlimJet...

My standard old suite is SeaMonkey...SeaMonkey is what Firefox wants to be when it grows up...
 
Try left clicking on the very top bar of the browser, then right click, select menu bar.
Then you should be able to see Bookmarks again.
I up-graded also, but my menu bar stayed put, not sure why yours didn't.
After Bookmarks comes back, select "Show all bookmarks" when the window opens select "Import and Backup" select "back up" make a copy of your bookmarks and save them somewhere. I usually name them "FF-bookmarks-date"
 
I'm a victim of old man syndrom and the never ending changes in Firefox are causing me to make some changes...got a buddy that is a real computer whiz and he's on deck when I can break him loose to come walk me through some changes...I understand "progress" but like E Bay it seems like some of these tech companies are busy doing "make work" for their employees...a bit like the Government..if it works and works well...quick jump in and change it...really frustrating...rant over

CTRL "B" will toggle your sidebar bookmarks on and off. There's also several other keyboard shortcuts for other things. Some people need to click the "Help" button. :roll: :wink:

The programmers change the way websites work to suit them. They say, "Hey!" I like this
with little thought for the users on the website. You see it all the time on the News sites.
I do not like to have my stuff changed.
As for pop ups, I use AdBlock Plus. It really infuriates the ad people that they cannot
jam ads down your throat and on top of your data.
Fox news puts a big rad banner at the bottom of my page saying they cannot give us
news if they cannot show the ads. Yet, they still give the news.
I use Google Chrome with AdBlock Plus.

Yes, I know that. It's called job security. Everything changes, and not just software. And everything will continue to change, so might as well accept it. Or not. Up to the individual. :)
 
The software belongs to the maker, not the user. You/we sign that away with the forced user agreement, no matter how much you paid for the software.
 
Firefox done it to me too. Why do they think we NEED these constant changes and updates? I am slow learning on the computer and once I start getting used to something, they think it needs improving and leave me in the dust again. I never started to use or buy a computer until I retired.
 
A LOT faster loading on pages now with the new version. 30 seconds and I have the icons back for history, bookmark, etc. that I prefer. Firefox is still my favorite browser and I appreciate that things load faster now.
 
I have Firefox and haven't noticed any changes. It still functions as it did before the last 'update'. I might caution you that there is a 'hoax' window that appears and says that a Firefox Update is needed. DUMP IT! Reminds me of work. I think our upper management has two working philosophies:

1. If it's not broken, fix it 'til it is!

2. We're not happy 'til you're not happy!

+1 for AdBlock Plus. I use it on my phone too with Mozilla.
No issues here since the update.
 
The new update is #57

You can find and install a previous version on this page:
https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/

You may want to look for the 32 or 64 bit version. (depending on what you have been using and what your system can handle)


Once you install the version you want, delete the FF57 info from your download folder and or control panel (remove programs).

All of you bookmarks and log in info will be saved.

If you want to keep the new version and just would like the old bookmarks menu available, just right click on the top toolbars (near all the icons for favs, new window, etc) and choose CUSTOMIZE.

A new window will open and you can the drag icons from or to the toolbar.

The one you want looks like a STAR with a square "u" shape under it.

Drag that to the toolbar wherever you want it.

You can also move the "HOME" icon to the right of the address bar instead of where FF57 places it on the left.

And to stop the AUTOMATIC updates, just click on the 3 bar icon on the right of the toolbar, scroll down to and click OPTIONS.

Then CLICK on GENERAL on the left (should be there already when you clicked OPTIONS.)

Scroll down the center of your scree to FIREFOX UPDATES and choose either "Never check for updates (not recommended)" or "Check for updates but let you choose to install them"

Then just close your browser and restart it for those changes to take effect


(or if you have an older version, just click on the 3 bars, choose options, then choose ADVANCED from the left menu and then choose never update or "let me choose" )
 
I dunno. I sure didn’t think Firefox needed “fixing.” I’ve been using it for years and until now have always been able to set it up so that it looked and worked the way I wanted it to. This newest version is a problem. I may have to find a different browser.
 
I'm running Firefox 56.0 (64 bit) for Linux.
You might look and see which level you have.

You can also look at your preferences to see if they over-wrote your
old ones. They should not have, but take a look anyway. Make sure you
go to the web page you want to start with. As Selena said, you can set up
a page of your own to take the place of your bookmarks, but that is not
always the best option. That said, I start with my own web page each time
Firefox opens. In that one I have a strange looking link to make it easier
to do surfing from my cell phone.

Main point is to make it easy for yourself. I have been working with these
ding-dang things for decades, and I find I am using less and less of what
I did before. Set it up so you get what you want. :wink:
 
We mainly use Opera but also have the new version of Firefox. No real problems with using it but we don't like that the Autopagerize addon doesn't work on the new version.
 
I want to thank ALL of the great info on how to deal with it. I'm computer stupid enough to where I'll print these instructions & have Miss Penny fix things for me. THANKS again!!!!!!
 
I dislike almost everything about computers these days. I use Google Chrome for a browser... So far it's suitable. I used to use firefox, but I got a slew of viruses as soon as I got Firefox, and when I quit using it I stopped getting viruses. I dunno... That was 8 years ago.

Everything today is written with mobile devices in mind, so the computer types like us old folks get left in the dust with marginally functional crap. I used to get cross... Now I'm just amused. ;)

I really like Chrome more and more. But! You cannot have it automatically delete cookies when you close the browser like you can with Edge and Firefox. But! Chrome handles adobe flash much nicer than MSFT Edge. I know Flash is on it’s way out, but many websites still use some form of Flash. However! Chrome still accessed websites easier than other browsers.

Sorry for the confusing answer, I’m learning a lot in my new job. We deal with this daily.

Do one other thing.

Build a text file with the specific things you did to get it back to where you
want it. While . . . all . . . of that information is in the documentation, do
you want to re-read all that again? I keep several files for "customization"
of various packages with . . just . . what I want. If it is ever needed again
(probably will be) you can go to exactly what you NEED, rather than all
the other "stuff". 8)

It got me a week ago with the update.
My bookmarks and history plus other things can be found in the top left corner, third from the right icon. It's there
 
Just wait until you are forced to buy a new car....
In 2016 I was able to get a new Camry XLE without the autonomous braking, without the lane departure warning, without the blind-spot warning and WITH a manually adjusted rear-view mirror. Same price as with all those fabulous items. You can rest assured that I will not be able to get what I WANT the next time (that I'm forced to buy a new car.) YUP change gets much more difficult with age.
 
Being a firefox user I'm happy with the change works incredibly fast!

Took me a few minutes to figure out where my book marks were hid after
that things are good. ps
 
Hi,

I wasn't too pleased when Firefox told me it was updating and my bookmarks got all messed up (none of the filing hierarchy was visible.)

However...

On the top right of the toolbar, there's an icon which probably made sense to some Snickers bar and Monster drink fueled Baby Huey of a programmer, if not to us. I guess it's supposed to look like three books with a fourth leaning against it. Click it, then click the "bookmarks" link. Next click "bookmarking tools" and "add bookmark..." and your old bookmark section will come up. The new icon on the toolbar will look like a star with a bar under it. Everything now looks like it did before on my machine.

Ty, Miss Penny can probably get this all done for you in less time than it takes to read it!

If anyone has lost their well liked bookmarks, you can get past versions of your bookmarks from Firefox.

Just :
- click on the BOOKMARK icon,
- then click on Show All Bookmarks,
- in the new window, click on Import and Backup
- click or hover over restore
- you should then see a list of backed up previous bookmarks. Choose whichever date you want and it will place those bookmarks back in place.

This is for the older versions.

I do not have the latest version of FF (57) but would assume that process is the same.

Maybe I should not assume :?:
