I just put on a new Tac Sol fiber optic front site on my Mark II target & had it out to the range. Now I can't shoot worth crap with it ( I'm sure not blaming the gun) I shot about 10 targets and I was all over the place. Just no consistency ( yes they are loc-tited down) No groupings to say the least.
Both from a 25yd rest and offhand.
I'm going to put the stock front post back on because I feel that I just get a more accurate and consistent sight picture with the old "pumpkin on a post" hold. Anybody have the same problem?

IMHO, fiber optic sights might be great for quick acquisition but they suck for fine work. The glowing fiber optic rod tends to wash out too much of the target area. Too coarse for fine work. A marketing gimmick if you ask me but then, I never cared for anything but all black sights.

+1

They are even worse on a shotgun, where your focus is supposed to be on the target. That big, glowing blob just draws your eye away from where it's supposed to be.

I just installed the Ruger Hi-Viz fiber optic front sight on my Mark II/.22/.45.

I hit the range and put 400 rounds through it last week. The first 250 were all dedicated to sighting in, as I had done some metal work on the rear dovetail and I had to first center the rear blade, then raise it, then found my base was too far to the right so I had that tapped in, then centered the rear blade then raised it again.

So I only put about 100 rounds [giver or take] through it once I had the rear sight blade adjusted properly.

After getting the sights 'set' properly I began to just work on trigger work and my aim.

I can say that the Hi Viz sights worked better for me than the solid black front sight did. I got a tighter group than I ever have before, by about 1/4-1/3". This was indoor range at 7 yards.

I need to hit the range again and verify my work, but it appears I am more accurate with it than without. So I can't agree that they are a gimmick. They seem to allow me to be more accurate.

I did set them so that the top of the front sight is level with the top of the rear blade, and not the dot being level.

Were you sighting on the dot, or the top of the sight itself? Did you switch back and forth between them?

Just got back from the range this morning & now I'm back in control!
I went from yesterdays 4 1/2" splattering of shots at 25yds ( off a rest) with the fiber optics to todays 1 1/2 " to 2" groups.
Putting the old original Iron post back on it did the trick ( For "Me") Maybe I just have more confidence in that type of sight since it is what I have on all my MKI standards and single sixes. I have learned to shoot them well so maybe it is true "you can't teach an old dog new tricks"? I'm very sure that the Fiber optics will work very well for some other shooters but I guess they weren't for me

That's the key: finding what works for you!
