I don't know about 'custom cylinder' but you got to do what you got to do.

What pressure levels will a .45 Colt Redhawk cylinder withstand? I mean safely without damage ongoing? I own a .44 Magnum Super Redhawk that I now mostly use to test new reloads. Not that they are really all that wild. I'm pretty sure if one wanted to they could push the standard pressure envelope with the .44 caliber Redhawk cylinder. Not advocating those monkey shines, just wondering.

I've seen Brian Pearce, when breaking the .45 Colt into catagories, put the Redhawk in the 50,000 PSI catagory.

I have always seen the .45 Redhawk put in the 'Ruger only' catagory along with all the large framed single-action guns. 8) 8)

I've shot about 2500 very heavy loads through my Redhawk without any issues.

I don't blame you, the Redhawk is not the best gun gripwise for heavy loads.

That was part of it, and rambling started about Kevlar skinned white tailed deer, and shooting clean through bison with a 45/70, and how much is enough.

I do want a .45 Redhawk in a bad way though. I think a 230 gr hollowpoint at about 1200-1300 fps would work great for CCW :twisted: . I'd never do it, that could open a real can of parasites.

There are no SAAMI standards for Ruger only loads. Most manufacturers load in the 25K-30K PSI range. Doubletap ammo loads to 27.5K PSI according to their website.

50K PSI is crazy.

I don't blame you, the Redhawk is not the best gun gripwise for heavy loads.

Put a Pachmayr Presentation grip or an Uncle Mikes grip on it and it shoots heavy loads just fine. However, if you have small hands, you'll be better off with the SRH/GP100. RH grips which cover the backstrap tend to get pretty big.

I understand the cylinder swap is quite easy, but how much bigger would a SRH be that had been cut to 4"? Seems you would get a better trigger to boot.
