A man and his son were attacked by a brown bear near Cooper Landing. I haven't seen a full report but from the news, the bear knocked the kid down. And grabbed him by his leg, he had a 10mm and emptied his gun into the bear. Sounds like they had a GOOD first aid kit and got him medical care pretty quickly.

In further news wolves were out on the Dalton highway and offered to take some travelers out to dinner. Apparently they are losing their fear of two legged creatures.

I recently saw video of an Alaska fishing guide's chest rig with +2 Glock mags and Glock 20, one big can of bear spray and one smaller can of spray grabbable with either hand. A 8" tanto fixed blade knife too. Nice rig all business.

Other then a suit of armor I would call that a quite prepared man.

Read the Lewis & Clark Expedition journals...... bears are not something to have a close encounter with IMO! Especially Grizzley/Brown bears. Not sure I'd feel comfortable even with the 44 Magnum pistol on my person!
there are far more black bear issue in Alaska due to the hard numbers of just more black bears. 10 to 1 ratio is what the experts say.

A fair number of bears are killed IDLP with a 44 mag of all the possible handgun alternatives. Sometimes I carry a 44 and sometimes I carry a 45 Colt. It's just not convenient to carry a rifle or shotgun when you are out and about. That may include taking the trash out to the curb for the trash collector.

Tree huggers would have you believe that wolves are more afraid of you, than you are of them. Just off the top of my head I can think of another situation where a wolf got after an another tourist. There's a campground on the way up to Chicken and a couple of wolves got after the tourist who was fortunate enough to get inside a temporary toilet like you see on many job sites. Bit her ass, she was lucky she wasn't more seriously injured. Another tourist drove by and the right time and did enough honking to scare them off.

Having black wolves around would be terrifying at night. You would never see it coming. I have a jet black dog and its hard to even get a good picture of her. Outside at night you can't even see her at the end of her leash even with a bright moon and street lights.
