DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT

This bird is not a duck but a member of the Pelican family. He is a fierce fisherman and reminds me of the Mergansers. Cormorants are a rare sight on the high plains of Texas. Dr.C

we call them water turkeys in Eastern Oklahoma, they eat a bunch of fish, I suspect they hurt the fishing in some lakes

Those birds are a serious PIA...Right after Texas Parks & wildlife stocks the ponds across Texas with Rainbow Trout here come those greedy birds who can really put away some fish in just a few days....

I can think of a couple lakes around here where they can dine on the catfish, just leave my bass, bluegill and crappie alone, please!... :-)

Looks like that one has it's hands (beak) full. Would be interesting to see how it deals with that cat. A local stocked pond that I like to fish is loaded with cormorants and pelicans these days. Cormorant catches fish and gets mugged by several pelicans.

Kinda hard fishing around them.

If you've ever tried to remove one from a hook, you will feel different about cormorants....fishermen don't call them "shags" for nothing!

Those dudes can swim too. It is a race to reel in a live bate when those birds are around. :D
