Don't take ******

Listening to TV (wife's soap opera) and the commercial for some drug made the statement "don't take if you are alergic to (whatever they were talking about)". My question would have to be "how would I know if I was alergic to it if I had never taken it"?
And, no, I don't watch that stuff.I was reading a Dixie Gun Works catalog and happened to hear the blurb.

Yeah - if you actually listen to the disclaimers attached to just about every pharmaceutical ad, someone would have to be pretty desperate (or stupid) to take most of them.

The class-action lawyers advertising on TV are just as bad:

"Call (lawyer's name) if you've taken (whatever) and experienced pains, discomfort, or death (etc, etc)"...………. :roll:

Yeah, I have thought the same thing. And I have wondered about such things as, "the first symptom of a heart attack for most people, is a heart attack."
Ah, yes, the wonders of medicine, it is a world of its own. I think that the warning about allergies is a lawyers idea, it looks good in case they are sued.

I don't know of any doctor (except, maybe, a vet) who DOESN'T ask each patient for their current Rx listing.

OH ! I just listened to another drug ad, and besides stating that you shouldn't take/use it if you are allergic to it, they added "or any of the ingredients"...………. NOW, we have to be chemists, too !

Best not to assume the MD is paying attention to all the crap he’s prescribed, in my experience. They seem not to check the records before adding something to the list.
I’ve had a couple of trips to the ER to show for it.

WHY INDEED TAKE THEM Our neighbor, airmen in Viet went on some kind of rash med and lo and behold
he now has TB. Caught it over there, was dormant for many years, took the wonder drug and so now it is ACTIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now he doesn't care about the plaque, he now has something MUCH worse to contend with

I take quite a few drugs for what amounts to good health and they work well, I feel good and I think they prevent me from having more serious problems. blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, stroke.

The question about not taking a medicine if you are allergic to it is probably the result from patients continuing to take a medicine after they start to have a reaction believing the reaction might go away or the benefits of the medicine outweighs the side effects.

For most people middle-aged and older the idea that you don't need to take medicine for good health is bunk. Preventive medicine is one reason that we are living so much longer.

Myself...I am tired of these drug commercials. Miss the old days of just Bayer asprin or Geritol being the main medical remedies being advertised on the old but simple analog TV signals!

Preventative medicine is Not taking most medicines! The statin drugs ( anticholesterol)are terrible, can cause muscle problems, the quinolone antibiotics are not as hyped, also cause muscle problems. Diet and exercise is preventative medicine IMO.

That's not always the case. What if you get sent to a specialist for whatever reason. He doesn't know what meds you're on. Good example is I was sent to a nephrologist (kidney doctor) and he determined the problem was a way too low blood pressure. He changed my meds and now all it good to go.

I try to take as many natural remedies as possible. For example, my LDL and triglycerides were well above normal. So I severely limited sugar laden deserts and trans and saturated fat foods, cut out all dairy foods, started taking 6 Fish Oil caps a day, niacin, and adding more fiber to my diet. Also having a dog that wants long brisk walks helped. Now the LDL and triglycerides are in the normal range.
I would consider prescription drugs only as a last resort.

I keep an updated list of my meds, including over the counter stuff like vitamins, and every time I go to any doctor the first question is "any changes in medications". I just show them the list on the phone so they can compare it to last time and note any changes (if there are any).

Since I'm with Kaiser, right now I have two doctors, my primary doctor and my oncologist. I deal mostly with my oncologist now but even when I see my primary doctor the nurse that sees me first goes through my record in the computer. She will go down my list of medications to confirm that I'm still taking each one. The nurse for the oncology doctor does the same thing. Any Kaiser doctor will know what medications I'm taking.

The oncology department also has two pharmacists that work right there in the offices with them. They also coordinate all medications that each patient takes. If one medication reacts with another one they will know about it.

Every time I have lab blood work done, one of the pharmacists will call me the next day to discuss the results of the various tests. He discusses the results with the doctor first and if the doctor wants any changes in medication, the pharmacist will tell me. Sometimes they will have me discontinue one of the medications for a couple weeks until the test results change a bit to their liking. I can also view all the lab test results on line myself.

I like the way that Kaiser physicians are all connected to the same computer system and always up to date with my problems.
