A while back, I was at the local range. The main access was closed off because one of the black powder shooters was doing some long range shooting. His target was a big metal plate (maybe 4x4 or a bit more) with a black bull painted in the middle. A couple of us waited at the gate knowing he would be done soon. You'd see smoke from his firing position, hear a big boom, and several seconds later you'd hear a clang as the big bullet impacted the steel plate.
When he was done, he drove down to the main gate a let us in. Out of curiosity, I drove up to his location and struck up a convesation. He was using black powder in a Shiloh Sharps in either 45-70 or 45-90, prone from cross sticks at 900 yards. He let me look thru his sights at the target -- those sights outlined that black bull perfectly. Looking thru his spotting scope, you could see the bullet splashes on the metal plate -- some of which were in the black (not sure of exact size). There was enough wind to need proper correction. Those dedicated black powder cartridge folks can flat shoot.

I've seen a handful of guys knock over steel silhouettes at distances of 500 yards, off hand, with takedown '86s in .45-70 and .45-90. I'm pretty good out to 400 yards offhand, and I can hit the 1000 yard gong pretty regularly if I sit down with my M1 Garand and handloads.

Now that's funny! I like shooting the old 45-70. It is pretty gentle when you shoot it from a decent rifle at around 1400fps. Step it up to elephant gun levels in the right rifle with 500+grainers at 1800fps and it gets angry.
