It sure does get tougher as you age. I had quintuple bypass surgery when I was just 53 and within weeks I was back to full normal activities, other than jogging which took a bit longer. By just a few months ago, at almost 72, I had a kidney removed (due to renal cancer) and what seemed like a pretty straightforward surgery resulted in a long and difficult recovery. I think the answer is to have all the old-guy surgery done before you turn 40 and be done with it!
Just this past week a had a fall on my bicycle when an idiot pedestrian knocked into me at speed and sent me sprawling on the ground. What might have been just a bruising as a younger guy did a lot more damage and I think I may have torn my rotator cuff (again), so at best I am looking at many weeks of physical therapy to get mostly full use of my left arm and shoulder again (but hopefully will not need surgery).
Getting old is tough, but still better than dying young (I'm pretty sure about this!). And I can still get on my motorcycle and feel like I am 32 again instead of 72, at least for a little while.
Good luck with your recovery and take it slow but steady.
