how do you if at all keep records for your firearms , i have photos of each that i create a specific folder for that are subfolders for different types , i also keep a word doc with pertinent info specific to that firearm ,collector knives and Bayonets

for instance lets say a Ruger Mk 1 , on my computer i have a folder that is titled firearms ,open that folder and there will be subfolders , one will read Ruger , open it and select Ruger pistols , then a folder Mk series , within it will have a list of folders of my mark series by year of manufacture and model for each

ive been also doing the tedious task of a hard copy for the document safe just as a back up , i had kept it up except for the last 5 or 6 years

maybe i should delete since the 2 resident forum crackheads are on a paranoia bender , seem to think they are so important everyone is out to get them , what a clown show

Someone joins 8 days ago and wants to know how I "document" my firearms.

I don't, in fact can't. Lost them all in a house fire in the Palisades. And since I have no documentation I can't even file an insurance claim.

I see where the others are coming from. Quite often we see a new "member" wanting see pics how you store etc... It appears they are looking for info for nefarious means.

That said, "how do you record" does not seems to be that intrusive. A simple, I don't, in an Excel file, bound book style, fully documented etc... seem reasonable and non threatening responses. Insurance requirements may make someone look for a good method.

Me, in my head, and whatever state records I can retrieve. At one time (100 years ago it seems) I was all in on fully documented, but I buy, trade sell so much I gave up. (bad dog! :ROFLMAO:)

Same with traditional bows. Should keep records for costs/values, but I gave up. So far I'm not too upside down.

BTW- no need to get rude in response.

But seriously folks, if I have the records of my 3 guns in a computer, or in a binder & the house burns down along with both of them, then what?

Yup, Having a lake house creates that sort of problem as well. Love my boats, but they can get a bit unsteady. Wind and currents in the deep parts have lost me firearms left and right. Too deep and murky for any hope of recovery....

Hoopharted,, I can see why you may have taken offense at the first couple of posts.

And yes,, the year you joined is just over a year ago,, but the low post count can make some leery of posting personal data.

Being the father of a LEO son,, who retired as a property crimes detective,, as well as the brother of a retired Federal LEO who did computer forensics as his last several years of work, I also understand WHY many people fear putting out any data that is on the open internet.

Yet,, you are correct. You asked HOW a person keeps personal data on their firearms. Not WHAT they have/had. It in itself seems innocent. But knowing how various LEO agencies investigate potential criminal activity,, they can & will use ANYTHING to trace what they seek.

Many, many people prefer to not disclose what they feel is personal data, even if they haven't broken any laws. They just do not trust the legal system.

That said,, it sounds as if you have a solid method of keeping records that works for you. And I'm sure many others have done similar things for all kinds of stuff.

But I do think your personal insults & attacks upon members was a bit out of line. I hope you can think about all of it,, and apologize for the un-necessary verbal insults,, AND understand why they made their comments.

We here try hard to be polite & such with each other as much as we can. It's why we have such a good, long lasting Forum.

Please accept my post as one to make you stop & think a little bit, and NOT in any way as trying to be impolite or whatever.

I have a physical list in each of my safes and electronic versions in the cloud.
OK, not claiming computer smarts here. But having records in a cloud, OK I semi understand that. but considering a fire, where to store passwords?

I don’t think he wants a list of your firearms, just what system you use to organize your collection or accumulation…

Whichever you might call the guns you have….

To the OP, if you take pictures of each gun, just get several photos of each, with a good quality picture of the serial number.

Then save a copy in a different location in case of fire etc.

Just my two cents.

are you idiots kidding me , i will stack my collection up against yours any day , i dont post much because of people like you

2 sets of hard copies including photos. One set is kept here at my home and another with a trusted friend in case of fire or other mishap. I also keep a set of his. Not only firearms but other valuables are included. Such as tools atv and boat and fishing gear etc.

Overreaction begat an overreaction. The question posed is not nearly as intrusive as some posted by one long time member who has started topics asking where we hide our self-defense guns at home and do our wives carry all the time. Can't imagine why anyone answers those.

I used to have a list but it took half a day to make because I'm too detail oriented and I didn't update it so it's now useless even if I found it. I put a note behind the butt plate or under a grip that says when I got one and how much I paid.

Really, I was just going to answer that I have a data base with my firearms on it as well as a 3 ring notebook with each firearm having its own page.
I have yet to 'see' a nefarious person as a member here... seems if there ever was one they don't last too long.
I will say if either a crook or the government shows up to get my firearms... they will discover it is gong to be some more work....as it will take several people several days to find them all... my wife made us sell the boat and so I can't claim that boating accident anymore.
Oh and speaking of the all time fear of the government coming for your firearms... they won't... they'll just come for you.

Back on topic, half way through my first cup, ... it was a good question. Oh and I know some will cringe... but my data base is in the cloud.

It Was A Year Ago... But I Still Agree With You...

I use the Notes app on my iPhone/iPad with embedded photos and pertinent information; date of purchase, price paid, approximate value when purchased, seller information, who I want it to go to (when the grandkids are old enough) etc. I have it shared with my stepson in iCloud (end-to-end encrypted) so he gets updates when I make a purchase. I should probably transfer this to a spreadsheet, when I get around to it.
