Display on computer has shifted icon locations

The icons for start, skype and chrome which were on the bottom of the screen have moved to a vertical position on the right side of the display. I am not a computer person so this has me stumped. For example, I still look for a pull cord to start the computer each morning. How do I put the icons back on the bottom? I'm too old to change. Thanks. John Lee
