I live in a condo. The maintenance guy puts out snap traps for the pack rats. I hate it but am out voted because they cause damage. Yesterday there was one caught but alive. Releasing an injured animal seems more cruel than shooting him. A shot would get the swat team here.....suggestions? Is .22 short loud? Is airgun or BB gun enough..assuming a head shot. A kbar works but a bit personal for my taste

Aguila Super Colibre, no powder just primer powered .22's. Really quiet. Test one first as they have been rumored to stick on longer tighter barrels. I have never had that issue myself.

You can take out a squirrel with a BB gun, but ONLY if you are really close.

If it works on squirrels it's more than enough for your rodents.

THAT confuses me since I'm not sure why anyone would want to cohabit-ate with rodents.
As for the rodent in a trap scenario, just stomp it (assuming you're wearing something other than flip-flops).

Do you have any cats around. They make a quick and quiet kill on pack rats. Be careful with the rat carcass , although rare, they can carry some nasty germs such as leptospirosis.

thank you all for the replies....true, packrats are hard to love- $1800 worth of wiring damage to the car-- so, when caught and still alive in the trap I want to kill them quickly but....I was thinking gun because I am going to a gun show on Saturday--the old "if your only tool is a hammer all of your problems look like nails"...and a fine excuse to buy something to shoot--but a stick, a stomp, a ka bar or an ice pick is a better choice. Still maybe I'll buy a Ruger Wrangler and some Aguila Super Colibre for fun---and probably never see another injured packrat
CCI has a "target" short that is fairly quiet. But I have a Benjamin 5mm pellet rifle. Pretty quiet. I've shot stuff in my neighbors yard with out them hearing it. So they are fairly quiet. That wasn't in Idaho, but still it was in a neighborhood. The pellet will take out a pigeon.

I had a Daisy 177 that you pumped up. Ten pumps was decently powerful and would kill the pocket gophers in my yard to about 15-20 yards on a head shot. I used sticky trays for mice and two pumps at tree inches from the head did a nice clean job. Probably on something the size of a pack rat, I'd most likely do a full ten pumps just to be sure.
I have a Gamo 1500 and I shoot a pocket gopher in the head with is and they just shake their head a bit and run for their hole. Good practice gun though as it is very accurate. More so than the Daisy.
