Deer Season?

I have had someone try to tell me that the only deer season in Riverside County Calif. is for teenagers using black powder rifles. No other licenses are issued.

Does anyone know if this is really true?

I tried to find out on the net and can't find a definite answer. All I could find was a bunch of mumbo jumbo on pages and pages of crap that I couldn't sit and read through.

Cary, there are two seasons for deer hunting in Riverside county, Zone D-19. It covers parts of Imperial, Riverside and San Diego counties. Consult a F&W map for boundaries. It opens on the first Saturday of October and runs for 30 consecutive days. Rifle, centerfire handguns, archery and crossbows are all good. One buck forked horn or better per tag. Two tag limit. 1500 tags issued.

Next is the Riverside Apprentice Either Sex Deer Hunt within Zone D-19. Again, see map for boundaries/area. It is opened to junior license holders accompanied by an adult chaperone 18 years old or over. It opens on the third Saturday of November and runs for 9 consecutive days. Bag limit is one either sex deer. 39 tags issued.

Hope this clears things up somewhat. There are a few details I didn't mention but you get the picture...

Cary, start here, and it should walk you thru all the stuff Wolfsong talks about: https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Hunting/Deer

They'll have maps, tell about tags for different zones (most of the "good" zones require you to register for a drawing, though Zones A and B might still be "over the counter" purchases. Those are NorCal zones, though, so don't have anything to do with R-side Country.) There are also special hunts in there somewhere, usually for junior hunters, as well as all the regs on what you can hunt, equipment regs, etc.

It'll take you a while to get thru all of it, but should answer all your questions. Have fun!

If you want to take a ride, head over to the San Jacinto Wildlife Area, and talk to one of the wardens in person. Right now they're around on Wednesdays and Saturdays (waterfowl shoot days) for sure. Other days of the week it's a crapshoot. You're probably acquainted with it, but just in case, it's up Davis Road north from Ramona Expressway . I think it's Hanson Rd. on the south side. I just look for the market when I'm over there to know where to turn. BTW, if you've never been there, or it's been a few years since you have, you must go in from the south: they've blocked Davis Rd. coming from the north and Moreno Valley so you can't get in that way any more.
