For a short while around 1980, S&W made bullets and loaded ammo. Handload with S&W .44 240 JHP produced 10-shots, 4-1/4" group at 132 yards, from Silhouette Super with Leupold 4x LER. No optics allowed in competition in those days.

Ruger stainless steel prototype .357 Maximum, with 10-1/2", 1:16" twist bull barrel. Serial number 600-14111. Anodized aluminum long ejector housing. Load looks to be Federal .357 180 JHP over 21.5/H110 in Federal Super Mag brass. (Velocity p[robably around 1,550 to 1,600 fps.) Four inch group @ 100 yards. Target indicates 2,000 round through pistol. Cannot tell whether cylinder may be blue, or just is dirty.

Top photo: lead bullet man Ray Lones cast all calibers for husband-wife-daughter trio, with cast bullets in the .221 Fireball doing quite well. Except for the wood thumbhole stock, made by Lones, the Remington XP-100 is stock, right down to the factory sights, which by tournament standards are non-adjustable.

If someone knows name of the fellow in the center of the Texas photo, please let us know.

Note on photo of Nanette Workman shooting DWA M40 from dead frog position: first DWA Model 40 Super Mag .357 Maximums came with 1:14" twist 8-inch barrel. The 1:14" twist stabilized the Hornady .358 200 Spire Point rifle bullet. Started at 1,300 fps, the Spire Point hit the ram @ 200 meters about 100 fps faster than a 200 round nose started at 1,300 fps. Production of the 1:14 barrel soon was replaced with 1:16" twist, which failed to stabilize the long 200 Spire Point. Round nose bullets of 200 grains work fine from 1:16. (The long Speer .358 180 Flat Point stabilizes from the 18-3/4" twist of most .357 Magnums, even at the reduced velocity.)

Shall try to fine more dope on the prototype stainless Blackhawk .357 Maximum.
