Without breaking the gun money bank, do you guys and gals have any recommendations for a reliable, easy to use dash cam? Front/rear would be nice but not necessary. Going on line and researching has always been a crapshoot in my experience. Testimonials from folks I know and trust is the only way to go. So...whatcha got?

Only experience I have is with the one that is on my GPS... and it works really well... but that might be above what you are looking for... it also has the backup camera option... I've always been a Garmin buyer...

I installed this in my and my wife's trucks in late January. So far they have worked great. I did the "hardwire" so that it also act as a security system/camera so that when they hit the truck in the parking lot we might be able to find out who did it.

I was worried at first that the camera would be easily seen from both inside the truck ans outside, nope it blends right in.

I caught this guy on his phone in the rear camera

I bought a cheap camera on sale @ WalMart ($15) 3 years ago. It works OK and hasn't had any problems. The video is good enough to read license plate numbers of oncoming/passing vehicles and reasonably ID people walking past the vehicle. It has a replaceable card so you can save information for court/insurance/transfer to other devices. This one has a suction cup that is just barely adequate. The suction will fail if the vehicle is left sitting facing strong sunshine allowing the camera to fall.
I have a video of the guy who nearly hit me head on after crossing the median of a 4 lane. You can see that the driver was awake and had his hands on the wheel, the plate, color, and type of vehicle--plenty of evidence to take to court if needed.

I bought one at a Sam's club several years ago, called "Think Ware Dash Cam." My only complaint so far has been the fact they want you to use your computer to download a manual to set or operate it,,, instead of sending a printed copy. How can you use your computer,, wired in your house,,, to adjust the settings,, while it's turned on in your car? I hate wasting a ream of paper & a whole package of ink to print my own manual. Especially when a lot of it is wasted on different languages etc.
But it operates fine, (even thought I've never been able to re-adjust the time stamp,) in recording activities, and if a bump or jarring event occurs,, such as an accident, it keeps that event in it's memory bank, as well on the removable micro SD card.

I used mine once,, when I was sitting at a red light, behind a car. The car in front of me, when the light changed, pulled her car in reverse, backed into me, then drove off. I followed,, all while calling the police. When we got to her house,, I stayed away,, but she confronted me wanting to know why I was following her. I politely replied, it was because she'd backed into me. She denied it & threatened to call the police. I told her I was on the phone with them at that moment. (Which was also recorded.) She got a bit belligerent,, and I backed away to my truck, which was blocking her driveway. The cops arrived & she went into a tirade,, accusing me etc. I politely asked the LEO's (two cars had arrived,) if they wanted to see the recording. One was talking to her,, while the other one took my SD card & looked at the evidence.
When confronted by the LEO's,, AND the FACTS,, she suddenly changed her tune. The damage was minor,, (broken front tag & cover,) and the LEO's & I discussed the options. I said; "If she'll apologize, for hitting me, AND for lying to all of us,, as well as pay $20 to replace my tag stuff,, I'd let it go.
She did.
The LEO's & I had a very pleasant conversation afterwards & they complimented me on my calm attitude & the way I handled everything.

I bought a KDLINKS back in Feb. 2015 that's not had any problems in over 5 years now. I also bought another one in 2017 for my truck that's also still working.

It's a KDLINKS X1 Full-HD 1920*1080 165° Wide Angle Car Dashboard Camcorder with GPS, G-Sensor, WDR Night Mode, 12MP 6-Glass Lens and 2.7" screen. I paid $165.99 back then.

There's probably better ones out these days but these are still working and they're used everytime my car or truck is driven. So I couldn't ask for much better.

You can also download a program on your computer for google maps that you can replay the SD card from the camera in that'll show your location on the google map with speed and time of day.

THAT would be far too incriminating.

Hi,

That sounds like the super snooper thingie my insurance company has to see if I deserve a certain discount. It was a good discount when all I had to do was report my mileage twice a year, they'd check to see if I'd had tickets or accidents, and was good for something like 30%.

Running the car on my phone and Bluetooth has no appeal.

why would you want one?

Hi,

A neighbor put one in his car a few months ago. I don't think he had it more than a couple of weeks when somebody did the "jump in, jam on the brakes and get rear ended" number on him out on the freeway. "Injured" party really iced the cake with complaints. Neighbor took video from the dash cam to his insurance agent. Do you have any idea how quickly some "bad injuries" can heal up, even before getting in to see a doctor? ;)

It's for your personal use not anybody else's. Unless you want to prove to someone where you were at any certain time.
