dang software license

I don't like change
I am using the same model laptop computer since 2007. over those years, I have bought refurbished models as one would go bad or get damaged. I just swapped hard drives so the software would go to the replace.

Well, last night the screen went dark. So I went through the old "spares", found that the original would boot up, the one that the software was originally installed. I was pleased to see that it booted and came up with my familar screen. BUT none of the MS Office programs will now work. It gives screen request verification as if the software was just installed then it just locks up.

Oh, I am using win XP and office 2007

plan now is to see if I can change screen on the one last used and pray that the software will work when hard drive is returned.

Plan B....buy new something more modern, Win 10 and new Office Software

Oh, Browser is firefox and I had to go back to LAN cable to get on tonigh

The problem with old is MS , Google etc no longer support Win 7 etc. so a person gets left behind

I would suggest get a W10 with latest office & you will be good to go for awhile

Many people say "my XP still works and I ain't changing"
While it will still work once there is a problem there is no support or fixes
They will be left behind along with a land line phone, the buggy whip and fax machines

Personally get new and through the old out
New computers are far less costly then there were even 4-5 years ago

Since you are being forced to change, look at Linux Mint. The default
browser is Foxfire, so you will see no change there. The default E-mail
processor is Thunderbird, which you will find to be easy to use/learn.

The BEST part in going that way is that 99+% of your current software
will run under Linux. You put in Wine (WINdoz Emulator) and run what
you are accustomed to (except games, which run slower).

BEST . . PART . . it is FREE . . . except for the learning, which you are
stuck with anyway.

I was very reluctant when I made the change about twelve years ago.
I was frustrated for the first week, having to learn the small details
because I do a lot in native DOS, but after a small bit, I found it quite
easy. BEST part of the conversion is that about 98% of the virus' and
malware is written for Winderz, and Linux is ignored. - - - Knock on my
wooden head, I have gone twelve years WITHOUT a firewall. That means
that running on the same computer, EVERYTHING runs faster.

Your money, your time, your frustration, your choice.


P.S. Linux understands winderz data, but winderz DOES NOT
understand Linux data. That means you do not have to convert
any of your current data to Linux format.

Which has links to all the documentation. Be sure you select the correct
copy (32 bit or 64 bit) for your machine. I suggest Cinnamon version
but pick which ever you like.

P.S. Once you load Mint, it will want to do updates. Not to worry, they
are free AND will take less time to download all updates, than to do one

Things are always hectic, so having time to shop is not possible. I am also worried about time to get a new one up and running, so I put a request into a local computer shop. I gave him my requirements of what should be $500 and willing to give him something to ensure all is loaded and working, BUT his off the cuff price of $1500 seems way out of line, even for a "buisness harden model"

Make sure the computer you buy has the software that you want. They don't just throw MS Office on there anymore. Oh yeah there is an ikon but it takes you to MS where you buy it, or rent it year by fear. My last lap top I downloaded 'AbleWord' http://www.ableword.net/downloads.html just to read and write 'Word' documents.

What ever brand you go with get one with Solid State Drive (SSD).

I can turn on my new Dell laptop/notebook with the SSD and be on line in less than 20 seconds.

update. . . Plan A sort of worked. I replaced the screen and the laptop I had been using works. HOWEVER, given I placed the hard drive in another computer (hoping that would work) my attempts to get the office software to work some how effected them when the HD was put back. I get the message to run install, but after a few seconds the program opens and works.

So I found the CD and tried to run repair and the message is that the program is no longer supported and can't be re installed

$1500 for a new laptop seems like a lot to have a screen and keyboard to keep me in touch with the outside world, but I guess I need to bit the bullet before this old computer dies for good

No I didn't - the HP I bought has been bug-free in the several years since I bought it.
