a "food dessert"...I hear that crap from raging Leftists.....and yes ...I would prefer they close their stores in high crime areas because they refuse to address the theft that now causes all the rest of us to suffer...we keep getting pushed farther and farther because of the crooks that get coddled .

Actually, the barcode is just a unique identifier for the product. The price is in a database somewhere.
However, if there is a shelf tag, that's the price. Having digital price tags allows the displayed price to be changed easily.
I've had digital signs change while I was talking to a customer about the product. Technology.
Walmart has been using facial recognition for years now. As you enter there are two globe cameras on either side of the entrance that are chest high.
The post office installed facial recognition cameras back in 2018 in all locations.

I think it is here. It came upon us so slowly we just don’t quite realize it. For example, the two minutes hate is here. Daily on the liberal media TV channels it is all about hating Orange Man, he is the evil one. Those with weak minds, who cannot think for themselves, swallow more than their two minutes of hatred of Trump, daily. Social media absorbs the minds of, especially the younger generation, people; brainwashing them into taking action on their own, against Trump, ICE, other police officers, and so forth. 1984.

Seems there is a Lowe's across any street where a Home Depot is ... except here. We have one choice plus a couple tiny mom and pop stores. Home Depot it is. They're no worse than all the other chains.
Try multi-quote. You'll like it and the pages will be shorter and read smoother.

The absolute worst part is that a lot of these chains, like Home Despot, share this facial recognition data with the government through 3rd party entities, like Palantir and Flock. It's scary stuff. Do any of you watch Louis Rossmann? He has a number of videos on the subject.
Another entertaining thread that made me laugh a bit. FR has been used by LE and retail LP/AP/ORC for a while now.....it's a great tool to match subjects to video BOLOs. Its funny because for a time some of the not too bright external theft/fraud element had pocket lasers on them when apprehended. A few times they were seen on video or during apprehension point at the exit cams.....but never at the face level cams mounted near the EAS towers.
Go ahead....use the LED advice given....it won't work...and even if it did you wouldn't be able to hit the multiple cams covering you entering, selecting, concealing and exiting.

I used to watch him when he did videos on fixing computers and phones. Now he just goes on rants about society.
I haven't seen much from him on society, but he has a done a lot about Flock/AI/tracking and right to repair. I watch just about every episode.

I certainly won't disagree with you on that. Besides 1984, there's Brave New World, a novel that describes our future and another book I recommend is State Of Fear. It's a fair story about global warning and how some ecofreaks have a nuclear device to do a big melt in the Antarctic. But about 3/4s of the way in, there is a discussion on how governments use fear to control their populations. What is said on the five, maybe six pages tells the whole story. When the Covid BS started up, it was just as if dot gov and the media used that conversation as a holy writ script. I mean they used it word for word. What was the scary part is having read the book I could see each step as they tried to get people to wear their masks and take the shots. For the record, I absolutely refused to do either on except the mask when forced to do so when shopping. Never took the jab and I had three docs try and convince me it was for my own good. I'll just say my response would not be welcome in a family forum.

Years ago, I remember reading about some store - maybe Target - sent sales coupons or something to a teenage girl for prenatal vitamins and maternity items. Parents got mad. Turned out she was pregnant, had searched for pregnancy stuff online; but hadn't told her parents yet.

I've been using https://face2social.com/ to see if my own photos show up on social media without my knowledge. It's a simple way to check where your face might appear online, which feels relevant given all the tracking concerns.

Maybe if shoplifters were dealt with more severely, especially repeat offenders they wouldn't need the cameras. Or maybe it's not just the shoplifters. The comment on the data centers is spot on.
Saudi Arabia used to have a wonderfully effective method of dealing with those who took the five finger discount too frequently. Sometimes the medieval solutions were the best solutions.

If there are cameras, security cameras or any others, there is facial recognition. Or at least the potential. It can't be prevented unless you wear a hajib and a veil.
Facial recognition technology is no sweat for computerized systems these days. They may or may not attach personal identification to the faces, but they will be able to keep track of individuals.
Gotta buy your food somewhere. The facial recognition replaces they customer loyalty cards. My store sends me coupons for stuff I buy regularly and almost none for stuff I don't. Having a camera at checkout eliminates the need for a customer to swipe a card, enter a phone number, or remember either of those. It would be patently illegal to raise prices for some customers over those charged to others. Discount coupons are not seen that way. Regular price vs discount. Plenty of examples of that. --Medical charge out of pocket vs having insurance, for instance.
That may or may not be ok with you, but that's the world we live in now. I tend to think it's helping me. YMMV
