Anybody hereabouts remember when Daisy, that famous maker of BB guns, made water pistols? Also a "Buck Rogers Ray Gun?"

The water pistols held maybe six shots, and one had to carry a fruit jar full of water for an extensive "shoot out." They were blackened metal, with a nickel, or chrome, plated muzzle, and looked like some European auto pistol. And, there was no orange muzzle fitting so the police wouldn't mistake it for a real pistol.

These were advertised in my first gun book, the "Daisy Red Ryder Handbook."

yeah, but that was back when we were taught as little kids to NEVER threaten anyone (as in unknowingly surprise) with anything that looked like a firearm. But, kids playing with kids was never (much) a problem.

To be honest, we even had BB gun wars, but one of the main rules was you had to have some of them goofy looking rubber swimming goggles to play. Even in the sticks we had some "tough neighborhoods" ... and lived through it :)

The water pistol shownis a Johnny-come-lately. The one to which I referred was all metal, black finish. A rod protruded from the rear of the pistol, in the place where a hammer would be. The muzzle was placed into the jar of water and this rod pulled back. The rod was serrated for six shots, and the filling only provide six "shots" before having to be reloaded from the jar.

This is close to the ones I had in mind, except the muzzle protruded and was nickeled, maybe brass, and the rod extending out the back of the "slide."

I know the one you're talking about. They had to be around 1943/44 IIRC. Might have been a few years later but I don't think so.

Seen picture's only of the Buck Rogers gun and no metal squirt gun. The latter plastic red and yellow one of later vintage
looks like something I seen on store shelves perhaps.
Born in '52 I missed some cool stuff.

The first plastic water pistol I had I tried to make it into a flamethrower. Read in Mechanics Illustrated or some similar publication how a flamethrower worked.

Filled the pistol with gasoline and attached a Zippo lighter to the muzzle end. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, the gasoline fused all the plastic working parts and nothing happened.

Lost my first BB gun when my dad caught us playing war. He marched me and it directly to the garage where it got bent in the vise and I got bent for the administration of punishment. I hope his hand was as sore as my butt. I don't think he would have been ok with it even if we used goggles.
