Custom Ordered Ruger No.1

Just how many of you No.1 fanciers would order something, that is not in the catalog. Obviously, it would have to be in calibers that are, or have been chambered by the Factory; standard barrel contours would have to be maintained, length might vary within certain parameters. Stocks are optional.
I have discussed this concept with a few people who have the where with all to make it happen. I have not been told "NO"! So there is a slim chance; but for it to happen, shooters, hunters and collectors will have to step up.
No weird crap, just an ability to select from a fairly extensive menu.
Who has an interest??

I was browsing older posts and came across this one.

This has been discussed in the past and I am all for it. Sounded like many others would also.

The general consensus has always been that the only way this would work is with available parts and no true custom work involved. A menu if you will , of calibers , stock configuration , sights or not , and choice of blued or stainless , etc. to chkose from to piece together your "own" rifle. I need to add that the choice of a circassian stock needs to be in there as well!

I for one would be pretty happy having to choose from a caliber list of current and past offerings! I don't know if there are any calibers ever offered in a 77 and not in the No.1 or vice versa but including them all is quite a list to choose from! I'm sure the cost would be a bit higher but if it were kept far enough below cost of a rebarrel it should be doable.

If that program were to fly it would be nice to see that done with the bolt actions too. My biggest gripe besides calibers available is usually a 22" barrel vs a 24" or 26" like they should be...awful hard to lengthen a barrel but someone thinks its too long?...easy fix there.

I'm one who likes the stainless/laminated too. A ss/lam rsi would be a good looking rifle imo! I'd have to think about calibers for awhile but a 7mm-08 is towards the top of my list. A ss/lam 1B in 264 would be nice too. And a ss/lam in 350 rem mag. Then I'd have No1's to go along with my 77's in those calibers.

I wanted a 257Wby but they never made one? So I have one build, I found a used #1 and have a 243 Win 26" Ruger barrel. Ron Smith will rebore it and rechamber it including milling the barrel octagon. I have the same system in 6.5x284 a great shooter. I would like to have a factory 257Wby in Ruger #1 since 1967 when I wrote to the factory. No luck.

I would ... such as a 24" 1-H in 45-70 or a 24" 1-A (with sights) in 7x57.

Mark, I went with the 1-H in 458 Lott for the purposes of loading 458 win mags to hot 45-70 levels. I've added weight to the stock and a Limbsaver, and loads that thump out of my Marlin 1895GS are puppy dogs in the 1-H. Even full power Lott loads are enjoyable with that Limbsaver on there...as long as you stand up to shoot. Granted, I have to buy different brass, but so far I really like it.

I went with the 458 Win Mag for that purpose ... hated it! Too heavy to carry afield. A 1-H with a C weight barrel (as the 375 H&H has) would be perfect!

Granted, I would also be happy with a 1-S 45-70 in 24" ... 22" just a smidge short, 26" a smidge long.

Are you taling about Ruger building "one ofs" for individual buyers? That would be a true custom shop service -- an idea prohbitied in Ol Bill's eleventh commandment.

Would I do it? Yes! IF the custom work was comparable in price and craftsmanship to the custom work I get from several gunsmiths.

The one problem I have is that I have already had built most of the #1s that Ruger never built for me -- including 1Bs in 9.3x62 and .300 H&H ; a 1S in 35 Whelen. 1Bs in 338-06 and .338 Federal, and a ltwt 6.8 SPC II. I also have accumulated other custom #1s in 280AI, 7mm BR...

If the custom work is premised on getting enogh buyers -- 50, 100, 250?--to agree on a common project in advance and pony up the $, I do not think it will work. Tried that years ago and got zero reaponse.

The way I understand the proposition is not actually a one of but more like Ruger having a menu to choose your options from. That I could see working vs someone calling Ruger with a spec list on how they want the rifle built. A menu could spell out calibers , barrel , finish , and stocks desired on your rifle. I like the idea and I would venture to guess at least in the short term it would increase sales on the No1's but I would want to place orders fast before sales slowed again and they stop such a program...

I'd say the biggest problem with sales of the No. 1 are because shops just don't stock them.

Ruger has built the No. 1 in a very wide variety of chamberings and formats that the vast majority of the shooting community should have no problem finding what they want. In the end, most people shop by the price tag and not the actual firearm.

We have hashed this to death. This is exactly what you could do in 1967-1969 in the non prefix era. It lasted until production demand necessititated the change over to standardized models in standardized cartridges.

I wouldn't look for a bunch of stainless/laminate variations as Ruger tried that and they were such slow seller nearly all have been discontinued.

Maybe if Lypsey or somebody else wants to order 250 or so of something but even then I don't think they'll be making the actions very long, if they still do.

Most polls show that less than 10% of #1 buyers prefer stainless/laminate.

Like most guys that wanted something special/one off I simply had what I wanted made.

I for one can NOT understand the idea of waiting 30 years for something you say you want, while you pray/hope the factory will make it.

It isn't going to happen. It COULD have happened as a privately held company had Bill decided to do it.. It is NEVER going to happen as a publicaly held company. There aren't going to be any factory 22LR #1s in our life time either. Straight from the horses mouth on that guys.

Had a 30-338 but gave it to Cousin Wayne. Then replaced it with a Browning 78 in 30-338. ;-)

Probably a few more around here. We built 9 BH 7 STWs before the factory finally chambered it, for one year. We've built 3 more since.

I encourage anybody that has a "Dream" #1 in mind to build it. No sense in waiting and the only advantage of the "one off" rifles would be the added value of a rare factory rifle. Which was by the way Bills objection to building one off or special rifles OTHER than the FOB rifles.
