Custom Old Model Super Blackhawks? Let's see 'em!

Howdy folks,

I'm kicking around some ideas for my first custom, leaning towards an Old Model Super Blackhawk for the base gun--if anyone here has used one as the basis for a custom job I'd sure appreciate a pic and a description of the "who, what and why."

Well, I do not have pics, but I can describe it: sent an OMSBH to Bowen Classic Arms and when I got it back it had:
a 5.5" barrel,
new front sight and Bowen target rear sight,
Bowen locking base pin,
Color case-hardened frame and hammer,
Barrel, grip frame and cylinder nicely re-blued,
Trigger tuned,
and now wears a set of Cary Chapman grips.
It really is nice and Bowen does good work in a reasonable time at a reasonable cost.

I would love to find a nice Old Model Super and "defile" it with a Bisley conversion, Bowen sights, barrel cut to 4 5/8" and some Turnbull finish work. Stock it in French walnut or ivory.

I just like the original design so much and shoot it so well I can't justify spending the money it takes to make it different. I always make new stocks, but that is about it. I guess I just like what it is.

It started out as a beat up pawnshop find, then:
barrel cut to 4 5/8
Turnbull casehardening
old army gripframe
ajax stag grips
bowen rear sight

Thanks so much for posting that pic--that's very much along the lines of what I have in mind. The Old Model Supers are a personal favorite and I'm leaning strongly towards finding one in rough condition to customize.

Far from a custom other than being shortened and now wears a Millet rear. Was pretty loose when I got it, but I fitted a new cylinder that I got here along with a latch. Now it is tight as a bank vault. I probably need to take another .001 off the bushing since it is a bit stiff rotating with Federal brass. Or I guess I could go thru my brass and sort it :roll:

Here is one of the first ones, I no longer own it. Tightened up and tuned by Harton and stocked by my brother Henry then firelapped it was a shooter!!!!

Here is the lastest on Harton built for me with a Clements Custom hammer and trigger. This one is totally tuned with custom stocks and its probably my very favorite SA 44 magnum....

Just took this one out shooting on Saturday. The barrel was shortened to 5 inches, it was reblued and got a red ramp front sight, and it has real buffalo horn stocks. Otherwise it is as it came from the factory and shoots excellent.

that is what mine was gonna look like. now the frame is in the hands of an able gentleman from tennessee and the parts are scattered across the forum.

Through much trial and error, I've found that the Super grip frame just doesn't work for me but I love the Bisley configuration and traditional lockwork. I'm also a huge fan of short barrels. My custom New Models are nice but now that we can get an Old Model converted to a Bisley with relative ease, I can have my cake and eat it too......some day.

I also wouldn't go out of my way to find one too rough. Remember, it takes a lot of time (which equals $$$) to fix one up. You might find yourself spending more to fix up a junker than it would've cost to get a nice one in the first place.
