I guess this is more of a gun question, but I posted it here because I am having a brass issue I thought you reloaders might be familiar with. Both of my 1911's seem to destroy the case mouth on the last round fired, it doesn't affect the functioning of the guns, but I am losing my precious brass! Anyone run across this before, Is it just a 1911 quirk, and can it be fixed?

What do you mean, "destroy"? A big dent? :?

That's no big deal. 90% of .45 ACP case mouth dents pop right out when you resize them, and the rest, you can iron them out by sticking needlenose pliers in the mouth and opening them. I've done this with hundreds of cases. No big deal at all.

I built a 45 recently using a Colt commercial barrel and slide. Mine did the sme thing except it was more than one case per clip- more like half with two big nasty crunches that ruined the case. Changed the extractor and works perfectly. Like Wes said above though, it could be something other than that.

Hope this helps.

Dan

What's this "ruined" business? I never saw a dented .45 case that couldn't be saved. :?

Yep, ruined. The case mouth looks like a file was taken to it, takes a chunk of brass about 1/16" off of it.
Okay, time to "read" the brass. Look at the head, find via the extractor marks how the case was positioned, and from that, try to figure out what it hit on the way out that buggered it up.

I can think of no reason why it does this on only the last round in the mag. :? :? :? Does it do it on the last round of every magazine, or only one?

The last rd has no others pushing it up, only the follower.....

That's what makes me think about extractor tension. I think maybe the extracted case is being held up under the extractor by the following round. The last round in the mag doesn't have that support, and drops from under the extractor.

96/44, I reposted your question over at Makereadyforum.com, where there are some very, very knowledgable 1911 shooters and mechanics, including gunwriter Charlie Petty, who spent more than a decade building world-class match 1911s for the USAF match teams.

You can see the responses and follow the thread here:

Snake, I looked at the link you gave. Some good info there. One of the guns is a WWII era Remington-Rand, so the smaller ejection port could explain that. My other one is a High Standard, I picked up a different mag to try, then will look at the extractor, etc. I also plan on replacing the recoil spring in the HS since it is probably overdue anyway.
