Cooper's Hawk

This guy landed on our patio the other day, not sure why or what attracted him.
When I went for the camera he flew to the basketball hoop in the pool deck.
I see these a lot out here but never this close.

Nice mature bird. Love 'em. Birdfeeder nearby maybe? Red eye is beautiful, compared to yellow of juvies.

Great picture. Probably a youngish female from the rosy breast feathers. The males are so much different (and smaller) that they almost look like a different species. We have a pair that drinks from the swimming pool on their way to and from our various neighborhood bird feeders. The female seems to especially like those Asian ringed doves and the male mostly "English sparrows" (which aren't either English nor sparrows) and house finches.

Does anybody know of a falconer who flies Cooper's Hawks, or are they too small for most hunting? (I know that Accipters are considered hard to handle in general--Steven Bodio says "crazy"....).

Have a nesting pair here. They've nested on three sides of yard, and then this spring, moved across the road. Crows roost nearby, and they keep each other agitated. stevemb
