Considering buying a P95, any advice?

This is the first time I have tried posting a new thread and I don't know if I'm doing this right, so please bear with me if I'm not.

In view of the many previously unimaginable things that are beginning to take place in the US these days I have almost decided to add a basic no frills 9mm pistol to my handgun arsenal. I have several revolvers and 3 semiautos, (2- .380s and a 1911 .45), but I'm mainly thinking about adding a 9mm because relatively inexpensive 9mm ammo is available almost everywhere in the US now days and would probably be the easiest to acquire one way or another in a SHTF situation. The P95 seems to be a bargain for $325 + tax at a LGS. Any faults, quirks, or drawbacks to the P95 I should know about before handing over the greenbacks? Reliable functioning under adverse conditions and the ability to take rough treatment without breaking down are the primary requirements for whatever 9mm I may decide to buy.

I have had my P95DC for more than 14 years and it has been a great experience. No problems whatsoever. The P95 is a fantastic weapon.

Two words: Buy It!

They are great pistols! Especially for the money that you have to put out for one. Most prefer the DC only guns which Ruger Discontinued around 2007. Instead of the manual safety/decock currently produced. Pics when you get!

Just what I was hoping to read from you guys about the P95, many thanks to everyone who replied. If everything goes according to plan in the family's financial affairs department there will probably be a new Ruger living here next week.

If I make the deal I would like to send pics Al, but I'm so computer illiterate that I can barely manage to send a message to the forum with this thing, much less pictures. Maybe my daughter will come by and do it for me.

My P95 Decocker has never jammed or misfired. It is rugged and easy to clean. I feel it is extremely reliable and will operate perfectly when I need it to.
It is a no-frills instrument that I have never regretted purchasing.

Good call... I would first choose a 'K' series P95... stainless steel. Second, if there is anyway to find a older DC / decock only model I would hold out for it.

Most folks like them, I find them a little big in the grip, but I like the manual safety/DA/SA action.

Who notes some security companies like the P95 better than the Glock, you can see at a glance it is safe.

I would rather have the decock model but now I understand that Ruger isn't offering it anymore. If that's right I may just hold off buying new and try finding a good used one either locally or on a gun auction website. I didn't notice if the new P95 I saw at the LGS is a decocker, but if Ruger has discontinued those I'm sure it's not. I'm glad I asked for advice because I don't like buying anything in a hurry. When I do I almost always end up wishing I had waited for what I really wanted to begin with, and I might have made that mistake again if not for you guys alerting me. Stainless would also be preferable, but I have been maintaining blued guns for quite a few years without a single one showing any rust or corrosion so I will take a blued P95 if no stainless is available at a right price. BTW, I won't be able to monitor this thread for the next few days, but I have learned what I came here to find out thanks to all who replied.

I love my P95. Eats anything I feed it. I bought mine used. I have seen some advertised used (on MN GunTalk Forum as low as $225 (with a stainless slide). Good luck.

everyone here knows how i feel about the P95. there are many better choices out there than that gun. i had nothing but problems with mine, and if you go on other sites including this site you will find the same. they are big and clunky. if your looking for a truck gun for under your seat then go for it, but if your looking for a nice piece to take to the range or to carry, i would look at the sr9, a smith or glock. but then again its only my opinion

Unlike the gentleman above, I had no problems with my P95. Fired great right out of the box, and with cheap steel ammo at that. It was a great gun for the years that I owned it and I regret selling it to this very day. Certainly there are better options out there if price isn't a factor but for a sub $300 gun(used) it's hard to beat. The grip is a bit bulky but it was never a problem for me. I will eventually own another one. I do agree with him though that if you can pay a little more the sr9 and 9c are great guns. IMHO the sr9/c is the best semi auto ruger's putting out these days.

I've had my P95 for several years and thousands of rounds. Best money I ever spent on a handgun. Recommend you spend a few bucks on some slip-on rubber grips. Makes a big difference.

I bought a P95 at a gunshow. I didn't like 9mm or plastic frames but bought it anyway because it was cheap. I liked it so much I bought another in stainless steel. Then I bought a P97 which is the gun I have laying beside me right now. All mine are DC only. I think the P95 is an excellent gun,solid as a rock,dependable, shoots what ever I load it with.

I bought a used P95 Stainless for 275.00 and it jammed so bad on every other round the spent casings wouldn't eject all the way causing the jam. I field stripped it gave it a good cleaning and oiling. I have shot over 1000 rounds through it since then wihout a single jam.

I do not think you would be unhappy with any P series gun. I have a P90 and it is one of my most Loved guns. But I am falling in Love with my SR9c quickly. The P95 will be a lot better priced gun and will last for ever.

I'm also on the lookout for a P89 or P95. One of the great things about them is good, reliable, reasonably-priced mags. I've heard nothing but good about the Mec-Gars, and you can even get 17-round flush fit or 20-rounders that I suspect stick out a bit.

Some pistols are "bargains" until you go shopping for spare mags.

My only advice would be to make sure you handle one enough to be sure it's not too big for your hands. If you need something smaller, the SR9 and SR9c seem to be real sleepers. When you pick one up, it's amazing how thin it feels.

While my P944 is insanely reliable, I prefer the SR series guns feel and ergo's much better. After getting a SR9 and SR9c, my P944 now lives in the safe.

Hey customf1, you must have bought kel ruger mans gun, LOL. I bought my first P95DC at a gunshow for $250 used but in excellent shape. I found another on GB that was at a local shop and picked it up for $250. I drove to the shop so no shipping or transfer fees. I think I'll go shoot one of them right now, see yall later.
